Yet another undefeated regular season is in the books for the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team, with yet another Section III Class AA title expected and much more hoped for down the road.
To finish the regular-season slate, the Bees went to Cicero-North Syracuse last Wednesday night and put together one of its best all-around efforts of the season. B’ville routed the Northstars 25-11 in the first set, prevailed by a 25-7 margin in the second set and earned another 25-11 decision in the third to sweep it.
Maddie Stone gained 27 assists, plus two aces and two kills, her passes often going to Michelle Voyer, who got 12 kills and three blocks. Katie Welcher added nine kills and two blocks as Kiannah Titus earned three aces to go with her six kills. Sophia Cronk and Rachel Liu got three kills apiece as Skyler Parrow-Strong and Rachel Foertch both delivered a pair of aces.
Six teams qualified for the sectional AA tournament, so B’ville, as the top seed, had a bye straight into Thursday night’s semifinals, where it could face C-NS again if the no. 4 seed Northstars get past no. 5 seed Fayetteville-Manlius on Saturday. The final is Nov. 9 at C-NS.
Back on Tuesday night, Baldwinsville’s boys volleyball team honored its seniors, and then went out and swept Oswego in three sets.
The senior group of David Abraham, David Cerqua, Ryan Shirk, Austin Catalano, Riley Shannon, Kyle Robinson, Max Thurston and Ryan Carson have formed the core of B’ville’s 2016 squad, and after receiving their accolades and recognition from the crowd in the Baker High School Gym, they set out to tame Oswego.
The Buccaneers were close in each of the first two sets. But the Bees laimed them by equal 25-22 margins before cruising through the third set 25-13 to close out Oswego.
Shannon put away 16 kills to pace B’ville’s front line, while Tyler Aiello added nine kills, Thurston had six kills, with Carson (three kills) and Nate Johns (four kills) close behind. Abraham gained 36 assists as Cerqua’s stellar defense led to 16 digs.
For the Bucs, Jason Proud had 24 assists, his passes often going to Trey Clark, who had 11 kills, helped by Matt See (seven kills) and Jake Caster (six kills) as Cole Shurtleff recorded eight digs.
Two nights later, at Central Square, the Bees won again, taking just three sets to down the Redhawks 25-14, 25-17, 25-20. Dan Cerqua notched 18 assists to aid Abraham (17 assists) as David Cerqua got nine digs.
Moving to the front line, Aiello had 11 kills and six digs, with Shannon getting eight kills. Johns and Carson earned four kills apiece. Thurston had two kills and two blocks.
B’ville finished its regular season with an 11-6 record, which included a 25-13, 25-10, 25-12 defeat to Rochester McQuaid on Oct. 22. Against the Knights, Abraham got 10 assists and David Cerqua had six digs as Aiello earned four kills. Shannon added three kills as Johns, Thurston and Carson got two kills apiece.
