Continuing its extensive slate of meets against CNY Counties League foes, the Skaneateles girls swim team made its way to Baker High School last Wednesday night to face Baldwinsville, and the structure of the contest had a lot to do with the Lakers’ 51-42 defeat.
Unlike all of the other home pools in the large-school ranks, B’ville’s home pool does not have a diving board. Thus, scores are adjusted without a diving competition, something the Lakers may have used to pass the Bees.
Skaneateles did win the first race as Lily Buchholz, Rose Keady, Grace King and Ashley Drotar went 2:00.31 to claim the 200 medley relay. Right after, Rachel Teixeira was victorious in the 200 freestyle in 2:10.15.
Quickly, the pattern emerged. The Lakers would win individual events, but see B’ville pile up second and third-place finishes, as it did in the 200 freestyle behind Teixeira and again in the 100 buttterfly behind Grace King’s top time of 1:10.60, and again in the 100 freestyle, where Leah King won in 58.26 seconds.
Teixeira returned for her second victory in the 500 freestyle in 5:51.65, with Grace King second. Buchholz went 1:08.14 to win the 100 backstroke, right before Keady finished second in the 100 breaststroke. B’ville won both the 200 freestyle (1:48.13) and 400 freestyle (4:04.02) relays.

The Lakers still own a 7-3 record and visit New Hartford next Tuesday before competing Oct. 14 in the Onondaga High School League championship meet at Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School.
