When Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa squared off in their annual head-to-head cross country showdown on Wednesday afternoon, it just happened to take place elsewhere, at Homer, but the intensity was just the same.
It proved closer on the boys side between the Red Rams and Spartans, but J-D, led by Patrick Dye, won 23-38, also sweeping Homer as ESM required a sixth-runner tie-breaker to top Homer after they tied 28-28 on the scoreboard.
No one could catch the Rams’ Patrick Dye, who won in 16 minutes, 33 seconds, half a minute clear of ESM star Nick Berg, who finished second in 17:03 as Jared Henry got fourth place in 17:33 behind Homer’s Grant Stokoe (17:23).
Other than Berg and Henry, no Spartans runner cracked the top 10. Instead, it was J-D’s Alan Gao finishing seventh in 18:18 that began the decisive push, with Luke Hobika rising to ninth place in 18:22, just ahead of Kaleel Boykins, who was 10th in 18:26.
On the other hand, the girls meet between J-D and ESM went decisively in the Red Rams’ favor, as it prevailed 16-46 while also hammering Homer 15-50, the same margin by which the Spartans prevailed over the Trojans to earn a split.
Hannah Butler ran away with the individual race in a time of 20:28, nearly a full minute ahead of Sophia Vinciguerra, who was second in 21:28. Abby Palin, in 21:41, held off Lily Dougherty (21:45) for third place.
Following this top-four J-D sweep, ESM’s Marina Lopez got sixth place in 22:05 behind Homer’s Zoe Fish (22:02). Then the Rams’ Jessica Spina finished in 22:20 for seventh place ahead of Abigail Leavitt (22:26) in eighth place as the Spartans’ Sarah Tingley ninth in 22:29 ahead of J-D’s Sam Aitkens (22:40) in 10th place.
Also on Wednesday afternoon, Fayetteville-Manlius, still atop the Class A state girls rankings, won 15-50 over Syracuse West, with Haleigh Pascual taking the individual race, her time of 20:10 beating out Emily Cook (20:23) for that top spot.
Grace Hausladen got to third place in 21:06, edging out Alexis Villalba (21:09) for that spot. Behind them, Maya Chiesa (22:07) beat out Chloe Bullough (22:09) for fifth place, with Grace Perry seventh (22:11) and Jess Aspinall getting eighth place in 22:22.
In the boys race, also won by F-M 15-50, the top runners did compete, with Jack Boltman and Ben Otis both posting 17:22 ahead of Patrick Perry, Matt Tripp and Max Perry, who all finished in 17:23. Eli Capri (18:00) and Joe Walters (18:32) rounded out the Hornets’ top-seven sweep as Mark Hanlon was 10th in 18:53.
Christian Brothers Academy had its girls team follow up its victory in the Oct. 1 Auburn Invitaitonal by defeating Pulaski 15-45 last Wednesday afternoon, with a sweep of the top-six individual spots.
Cory Knox won in a time of 19:18, with Lea Kyle second in 19:26. Nearly a minute behind them, Bri Pucci made it to third place in 20:25 as Deja Jones gained fourth place in 20:34. Lucy Person, in 21:07, edged out Claire Bargabos (21:11) for fifth place.
CBA’s boys team lost to Pulaski 26-30, despite the return of Dominic Morganti, who had missed some recent races, but showed up here and won the individual title in 16:32, nearly 20 seconds ahead of the Blue Devils’ Dan Hefti (16:31). Will Bianchi was third in 16:57 and Riley Nash was fifth (17:26) before Pulaski swept the next four spots in front of Zach Medicis (18:13) in 10th place.
