Noelle Staso, Anna DiOrio and Julia Atkins provided key first-place finishes for the Baldwinsville girls swim team as it earned its first win of the season last Tuesday night, holding off the Oswego Buccaneers 50-44 at the Baker High School pool.
Staso was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle in five minutes, 36.17 seconds. DiOrio needed 1:00.28 to pull away from the Buccaneers’ Katie Smith (1:02.57) in the 100 freestyle, while Atkins gained clinching points for the Bees when she swam the 100 breaststroke won in 1:17.18 as Grace Skapura was third in 1;23.54.
To start the meet, Diorio and Atkins, paired with Staso and Erin Mordaunt, put up a top time of 2:00.05 to win the 200 medley relay as Oswego was second in 2:02.86, and the Bees earned other key points from second-place finishes.
A close 50 freestyle saw Staso finish second in 25.68 seconds behind the Bucs’ Caitlin Gorton, who won in 25.43 seconds. Kali Sacco, in 2:37.69, was just behind Oswego’s Sydney DeLapp (2:35.62) in the 200 individual medley, while Grace Skapura got second place in the 100 butterfly in 1:14.49.
Two nights later, B’ville visited Liverpool, who was coming off a defeat to Cicero-North Syracuse. Even with wins in two of the three relays, the Bees could not overcome the Warriors’ success elsewhere and took a 101-82 defeat.
Atkins, Staso, DiOrio and Mordaunt could not match its 200 medley relay time from the Oswego meet, but still won in 2:01.97 to Liverpool’s 2:05.56. Later, in the 200 freestyle relay, DiOrio and Staso joined Alyse Baker and Kali Sacco as B’ville finished in 1:50.48, topping the Warriors’ 1:52.97.
Liverpool countered by winning every individual event until the 100 backstroke, where Allison Lange (1:10.76) and McKenna Redmore (1:12.46) went 1-2 for the Bees. Staso added a victory in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.57.
DiOrio took second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (27.45 seconds) and 100 freestyle (59.82 seconds), each time with Liverpool’s Jaida Fox prevailing. Sacco, in the 200 IM, finished in 2:33.03 behind the Warriors’ Maddie Rose (2;31.01) as Sacco took second in the 100 butterfly. Claire Burke was second in the 500 freestyle.
More meets follow this week for B’ville, who have to go up against the likes of West Genesee, CBA and Jamesville-DeWitt.
