Even with its own strong and deep roster, the Cicero-North Syracuse Blue golf team knew that it needed consistent performances against the other top CNY Counties League sides if it wanted a shot at league honors.
When the Northstars went to Woodcrest last Tuesday to take on Fayetteville-Manlius, it only had one round under 40, far from enough to keep up with the Hornets, who prevailed by a 184-205 margin.
Brendan Villnave posted a 38 for nine holes, third among individuals as F-M’s Kyle Gilroy blistered to a season-best 32 and teammate Adam Butch added a 37. Nick Ernstine and Justin Pellegrino both shot 41 and Chris Ranalli added a 42, but the Hornets also got 38s from Tommy Ryu and Sam DiChristina, plus a 39 from John Cacchio.
As C-NS Blue awaited its intersquad match with C-NS Green, the latter side played on Wednesday against visiting West Genesee at Northern Pines. And the Northstars played quite well, even though it lost, 187-197, to the Wildcats.
What’s more, C-NS Green’s Chase Hurley shot the low individual round of 36. Jake Nardozza and Mike Battaglia each posted 39 in front of Ben Haven (40) and Ryan Sisco (43), but the Wildcats had five sub-40 totals as Dylan Plis, Nick Bove and Joe Morgan each had 37 and Jimmy LaValle and Dan Benetti both earned rounds of 38.
C-NS Green also faced Syracuse City on Friday at Drumlins, and the Northstars prevailed 199-223, displaying tremendous consistency among its top players.
Battaglia and Chase Hurley each shot 39, with Jake Nardozza and Carson Carino producing 40s as Haven and Sisco both finished with 41, the same as Syracuse’s top two golfers, Joe Lee and Seth Lee.
