Once more, the West Genesee track and field teams got a taste of how tough it was to go up against three large and powerful programs within the CNY Counties League National division.
During last Thursday’s CNYCL National meet at Liverpool High School Stadium, the girls Wildcats got 84 points, but still settled for fourth place in a five-team field. WG’s boys were also fourth behind the trio of Cicero-North Syracuse, Liverpool and Baldwinsville.
The Wildcats’ 4×800 relay team would prevail as Sara Ferranti, Emily Young, Mia Mitchell and Maria Matkoski roared to a time of 9:21.45, nearly a minute clear of runner-up Liverpool, who had 10:10.51. Mitchell got sixth place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:07.90, with Ferranti seventh in 5:19.38.
Then Carly Benson, taking her turn in the 3,000-meter run, pulled away to win in 10:39.60, with the field more than 10 seconds behind, though it included Bridget Spiddle, who gave WG a fifth-place finish in 11:40.86. Kendall Dombroske earned third place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:02.27.
Matkoski would contend in the 400-meter dash, getting second place in 1:01.50 just behind B’ville’s Katie Wicks (1:01.12), while also pairing with Young, Janet Nolan and Shelby Kiteveles for third place in the 4×400 relay in 4:15.82. Madeline Lowry took eighth place (1:09.34) in the 400.
Megan Delia had her best finish in the triple jump, where a leap of 34 feet 1 ¼ inches put her second behind C-NS’s Shayla Webb (36’5 ¼”). Delia also went 27.17 seconds in the 200-meter dash, finishing third as Avery Rydelek got sixth place in 29.89 seconds.
J’Nazia Anderson would unleash a third-place shot put toss of 33 feet ¼ inch and earn third place, with Elizabeth Jones (28’8”) finishing sixth. Then Anderson finished sixth in the discus, going 70’4”, while Linnea Ceilly was 10th.
Madalyn Benson made it to fourth place in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:10.99, with Mitchell sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:34.36, ahead of Ferranti (2:37.21) in eighth place. Katherine Graziano took 10th place in the triple jump.
In the 4×100, Fox, Nolan, Kiteveles and Thi Tran finished second in 52.31 seconds behind Liverpool’s winning 50.41 seconds. Fox got fourth place in the 100-meter dash in 13.36 seconds, with Aubrey Trett (14.72 seconds) eighth, and Fox went 14’3 ½” in the long jump for sixth place as Karsyn Plis was 10th. Nolan finished seventh in the high jump.
Evan Tuthill managed the Wildcats’ lone victory on the boys side, throwing the discus 123 feet 7 inches to beat B’ville’s Judson Fletcher (114’11”) by a healthy margin, while Jayson Body was fourth with a heave of 107’8”. Tuthill also threw the shot put 40’2” and made it to fourth place, with Chris McAfee (37’4”) in sixth place.
Contending in the boys 3,200-meter run, WG’s David Leff managed second place in 9:33.63, not far behind Liverpool star Ben Petrella, who won in 9:31.65. Sean Byrnes finished eighth in 10:42.81.
Leff, Byrnes, Russ Graziano and Ryan Dunning finished second in the 4×800 relay in a swift 8:23.51, with Liverpool prevailing in 8:20.95. Dunning needed 10:39.65 for fourth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while Jack Richards was eighth. Graziano went 2:08.41 for sixth place in the 800.
Mark Kopp, Peter Bowman, Javier Monserrate and Cameron Mitchell were fifth (46.50 seconds) in the 4×100, with Mitchell seventh in the 200 in 24,84 seconds, just behind Mark Dellefave (24.74 seconds) in sixth place. Dellefave, Mitchell, Griffin Dombroske and Paul Stannard were fourth in the 4×400 in 3:41.97.
Andrew Berry, with a time of 11.43 seconds, made it to the finals of the 100 sprint, where he improved to 11.42 seconds and finished sixth. Tim Huppman got sixth place in the 400 hurdles in 1:04.58 before Cam McCrea finished sixth in the pole vault, clearing 9’6”.
Patrick Trivison and Ryan North were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the mile, as Griffin Dombroske was eighth in the 400 sprint and Kopp 10th. Dombroske got seventh place in the long jump with 18’2 ½”, just ahead of Monserrate (18’1”) in eighth place. David Pinker was eighth (35’8”) and Mitch Colvin ninth (35’7”) in the triple jump.
After all this, WG competed again Saturday in the Cicero-North Syracuse Invitational, where the girls Wildcats finished fourth with 82 points, and while the boys had just 42 points, it still took third place behind C-NS and Liverpool.
Carly Benson was victorious in the girls 800 in 2:13.37, more than two seconds ahead of the field. In the 3,000, it was Young’s turn to triumph as she went 10:38.30 to top a field that included Mia Mitchell, who was fourth in 11:05.27.
Kendall Dombroske, in 4:56.44, was second in the 1,500, while Matkoski got third place in 5:02.42. Delia went exactly 13 seconds in the 100 sprint to finish second behind Liverpool’s Kierra Richarson (12.65 seconds) and, with Dombroske, Young and Carly Benson, got third place in the 4×400 relay in 4:05.56.
Fox was second (1:01.29) to CBA’s Anna Schug (57.93 seconds) in the 400 sprint., moving on to get second place in the 200 in 26.89 seconds to beat out Matkoski, who was third in 27.47 seconds, and also taking sixth in the long jump. Madalyn Benson was third (1:09.72) in the 400 hurdles, while Nolan was sixth in the high jump.
Westhill-Bishop Ludden featured Katherine Doherty, who was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.01 seconds, and Shellie Sakran, who was fifth (87’9”) in the discus. Jordan-Elbridge had Mary Elizabeth Dristle take fifth place in the 2,000 steeplechase in 8:19.58.
In the boys meet, Leff, in the 800, finished second in something close to a dead heat, with he and Liverpool’s Stephen Schulz both finishing in 1:58.48, but Schulz prevailing because he was three-thousandths of a second faster than Leff, who would help Dellefave, Stannard and Domboroske finish third in the 4×400 in 3:39.77.
Body was a force in the discus, throwing it 125’8” to beat everyone except Skaneateles’ Chase Corcoran, who won with 135’5” as Tuthill, who was fifth in the discus (113’10”), also got fifth place in the shot put, throwing it 40’ ¼” as McAfee was seventh with 37’10 ¼”.
Berry got third place in the 100 sprint in 11.46 seconds, adding a sixth in the 200 in 23.28 seconds. Byrnes was fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:44.41. Dellefave took sixth in the 400 sprint in 54.14 seconds. Monserrate, Kopp, Esisas Brumfield and Cameron Mitchell were fourth in the 4×100 in 46.73 seconds.
J-E’s modest participation in this meet included a shot at winning the 4×400 ahead of West Genesee. Pat Fordyce, Ethan Kinney, Russell Hines and Anthony Ortiz went 3:33.78 to beat the Wildcats, but log behind C-NS’s winning 3:28.83.
