Even the combined girls track and field team from Westhill-Bishop Ludden could not take down Cazenovia in the battle for top honors duringWednesday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet at Marcellus.
The Warriors finished with 117 points, clearing one set of Lakers from Skaneateles (95 points) for the runner-up spot, but behind the other set of Lakers who won by picking up 146 points. Further back, Solvay, with 33 points, beat out host Marcellus (30.5 points) and Jordan-Elbridge (29.5 points) for sixth place.
Yet another 1-2 finish from Westhill-Ludden came in the pole vault, where Katherine Doherty cleared 10 feet to win and Noelle Coolican topped 9 feet for second place.
Doherty went 17.07 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to get second place behind Hannibal’s Tayler Dence (16.63 seconds), also pairing with Mary Kate Washburn, Olivia Daigneau and Jayanna Monds for fourth place in the 4×100 relay in 52.37 seconds.
Daigneau, Haylei Coolican, Megan O’Reilly and Alaina Kenny were second in the 4×800 relay in 10:08.66 as CBA won in 10:05.47. Marcellus had Crystal Silliman, Tora Fey, Morgan Gould and Eeva Kortesoja finished sixth in 10:58.33.
On her own, Coolican got to second place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:49.61 behind Cazenovia’s Meggie Hart (7:35.63), while Carmelia Carr was fifth in 8:23 flat. Then, in the high jump, Coolican finished third, clearing 4’8”.
Genny Corcoran needed 11:07.93 for second place in the 3,000-meter run behind Cazenovia’s Clara Rowles (10:35.26), while Kenny finished third in 11:15.53. Mackenzie Powers finished second in the pentathlon, earning 1,595 points to trail Cazenovia’s Holly Gamlen (1,726 points), while Emma Bryant was fourth with 1,336 points.
Annibel Coolican got third place in the 800-meter run in 2:30.27and matched that finish in the triple jump, going 32’2 ¼” to beat out Zoe Fortin, who was fourth (31’9 ¼”) after a seventh-place finish in the long jump.
Solvay got its lone win from Samantha Waters in the discus, where Waters threw it 94’2” to beat out two Westhill-Ludden throwers, Shellie Sakran in second place (86’1”) and Washburn in third place (79’9”). Waters also threw the shot put 29’10 ¼” for third place as her teammate, Jackie Allen, was fifth (27’4”) and Washburn was in between them in fourth place (29’6).
The Bearcats’ Katie Harrington rose to third place in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:11.10, not far behind the winning 1:09.50 posted by Dence, Harrington also was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.76 seconds and tied Annibel Coolican for third in the high jump, also clearing 4’8”.
Despite its modest point total, Marcellus did give home fans something to cheer about when Mary-Catherine Coon edged out Skaneateles’ Amanda Wetmore, 12.92 seconds to 12.97, to win the 100-meter dash. Coon went on to finish fourth in the 200-meter dash in 27.40 seconds and tied for sixth in the high jump.
Gould went 11:39.05 for fifth place in the 3,000 as Kortesoja finished sixth in 11:43.53. Silliman was seventh in the 400-meter dash in 1:06.66, with Kira Hawes in eighth place and Solvay’s Madison Gwynn ninth. Fey earned sixth place in the 800 in 2:38.03.
J-E’s Abby Gugel would take third place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:02.43, while Emma Burns was fourth in 5:03.23, ahead of Westhill-Ludden’s Genny Corcoran (5:05.23) in fifth place as Gould finished seventh for Marcellus.
Another runner-up effort for the Eagles came in the 4×100, where Abigail Fallon, Julie Hines, Madi Hatt and Emily Klock went 51.92 seconds, trailing only Skaneateles (50.54 seconds). Hatt, Klock, Hines and Burns were third in the 4×400 in 4:18.92, with Westhill-Ludden (4:25.87) settling for third place.
The Eagles’ Natalyn Walts finished fifth in the pentathlon with 1,180 points and Fallon got to fifth place in the 100 hurdles in 18.04 seconds, edging out Marcellus teammates Haley Randall (18.09 seconds) and Jane Stewart (18.41 seconds) in the sixth and seventh spots. Mary Elizabeth Dristle was sixth in the 2,000 steeplechase in 8:33.99 and Theresa Dristle finished seventh in the pole vault.
