Each of Chittenango’s track and field teams would make their way to Fulton for Monday’s Onondaga High School League Freedom division championship meet, where girls Bears managed a fifth-place finish.
Picking up 54 points, Chittenango’s girls were right in the middle of an 11-team field where Jamesville-DeWitt, the regular-season league champions, reinforced that effort by scoring 171 points to pull away from runner-up East Syracuse Minoa (106 points).
Kaitlyn Swain put the Bears into the win column in the 400-meter dash. With a time of 59.69 seconds, Swain was the lone competitor to break the one-minute mark ahead of J-D’s Elena Haarer, who was second in 1:01.78, more than two seconds behind.
Swain also was second in the 200-meter dash in 27.11 seconds to J-D star Alexandria Payne, who won in 26.33 seconds and also prevailed in the 100 hurdles while finishing second in the 200-meter dash.

Meanwhile, the Chittenango boys track team picked up 33 points in its OHSL Freedom meet, ending up in ninth place, far from the battle at the top where ESM (106.5 points) edged Central Square (104 points) to prevail,
Ten of those points came from Akira Gatewood, who triumphed in the 200, going 23.25 seconds to win by a comfortable margin over Homer’s Matt Guerrera (23.49 seconds).
‘Nick Stanton, who was seventh in the 200, went 52.71 seconds to get third place in the 400 sprint, not far from the winning 52.04 posted by Central Square’s Will Gordon. Stanton, Gatewood, Dylan Davie and Jacobi Dwyer had a fourth-place time of 3:35.45 in the 4×400.
