Abby Gugel, on the girls side, and Russell Hines, on the boys side, led the Jordan-Elbridge track and field team to Alibrandi Stadium last Friday and helped the Eagles earn a series of strong finishes during Christian Brothers Academy’s Brother Basilian Invitational.
During the girls 3,000-meter run, Gugel pulled far away from the rest of the field. Her time of 10 minutes, 25.18 beat the runner-up, Skaneateles’ Natalie Condon, by nearly a full minute as Condon finished in 11:25.05.
As for Hines, his big moment came in the boys 800-meter run, where he broke the two-minute mark and won in 1:59.90, comfortably ahead of Institute of Technology Central’s Solomon Lawrence (2:00.83) at the line.
In the girls 4×100 relay, J-E’s quartet of Madi Hatt, Emily Klock, Ashlee Eaton and Julie Hines finished in 52.64 seconds, trailing only Skaneateles, who won in 51.85 seconds. Hines also took fifth place in the 200-meter dash in 27.75 seconds and helped Klock, Hatt and Emma Burns get fourth place in the 4×400 relay in 4:14.10.
On her own, Burns contended in the 800-meter run, getting to third place in 2:25.83. Theresa Dristle was sixth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:18.10. Hines tied for ninth in the high jump as Ashlee Eaton was 11th in the 100-meter dash, with Klock 11th in the 400-meter hurdles and Megan Jackson 12th in the triple jump.
Back at the boys meet, J-E’s Brad Marshall threw the shot put 46 feet 4 ½ inches for a third-place finish as Westhill-Bishop Ludden saw Sean Corbett get fourth place (46’ ½”) and also finish fifth in the discus, heaving it 110’4”.
Russell Hines helped Ethan Kinney, Anthony Ortiz and Marion Quigley a second-place finish in the 4×100 relay in 46.50 seconds, just behind CBA’s winning 46.33 seconds. Pat Fordyce joined Hines, Kinney and Quigley for third place in the 4×400 relay in 3:39.09 as Quigley was fourth in the long jump (19 feet ¼ inch) and Kinney was fifth in the 400 sprint in 53.35 seconds.
Solvay had its track and field teams take part in a three-team match against Hannibal and Cazenovia, where in the boys meet Nick Ferri won twice, covering the 110 high hurdles in 18.3 seconds and earning a first-place long jump of 18 feet ½ inch.
Mike Tomoroska was victorious in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet, while Jonah Cavallo took the 800-meter run in 2:09.6 and Jordan Devereaux won the 200-meter dash in 24.1 seconds.
saw its girls track team struggle in a three-team match against league-leading Cazenovia and Hannibal last Wednesday afternoon, the Bearcats falling 94-44 to the Warriors and 112-29 to the Lakers.
Samamtha Waters did win the discus, though, as she unleashed a top throw of 86’11” to beat the field by more than 12 feet. Waters also was second (29’2”) to Cazenovia’s Jamie Joseph (29’6”) in the shot put.
Katie Harrington finished second in the triple jump, going 30’8” to finish behind Cazenovia’s Maddy Gavitt (32’11”), and second in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.1 to Hannibal’s Taylor Dence, who won in 1:11.3 and got the runner-up spot in the 100 hurdles in 17.4 seconds, again with Dence (16.6 seconds) on top.
