For the Fayetteville-Manlius girls lacrosse team, the memory of that 16-2 defeat at West Genesee lingered, and led to a strong showing in last Tuesday’s game at Baldwinsville, where the Hornets routed the turmoil-affected Bees 17-5.
When these teams had first met on April 15, B’ville had put up a good fight, though F-M did prevail 11-9. The circumstances for the rematch were far different.
Right before the game, word got out that head coach Doug Rowe, who is stepping down at season’s end, would sit out two games as the result of an agreement with the school district. Thus, long-time assistant coach Lionel Brown got a chance to lead B’ville at a time where, at 4-7, it needed good results
The Hornets didn’t cooperate, though, bolting out to a 9-3 halftime lead and refused to let up, even with a running clock. No one on the Bees’ attack could get rolling as Glory Johnson got held to two goals, with Julia Pelcher, Hannah Johnson and Emma States adding one goal apiece. Sara Goodwin picked up an assist.
Meanwhile, six different Hornets managed multiple goals. Mary Trop scored four times, with Jane Cote getting two goals and four assists. Amanda Cramer and Kiera Shanley each had three goals.
Allison Macrae had two goals and two assists and Gemma Addonizio also found the net twice. Sydney DiGirolamo had the other goal as Katie Shanley got two assists. Annie Steigerwald and Jamison Seabury had one assist apiece.
In a non-league game on Thursday night, F-M welcomed 8-2, state Class C no. 6-ranked Westhill, who has flourished under first-year head coach and former Christian Brothers Academy star Brittany Brigandi.
Still, the Hornets proved too good for the Warriors, prevailing 17-6 in a game where steady production from a variety of players helped F-M maintain full control.
Though Macrae led with three goals and two assists, three others – Cramer, DeGirolamo and Seabury – also had three-goal hat tricks, with Cote scoring twice and adding a pair of assists. Trop found the net twice as Jessica Aspinall recorded a goal and Katie Shanley contributed an assist.
The up-and-down nature of the F-M boys lacrosse team’s 2016 season hit another down cycle. Given the string of tough games it faces down the stretch, the Hornets, who lost in overtime at Cicero-North Syracuse on April 29, sought a win over Auburn last Wednesday at Holland Stadium – but could not get it, taking a 10-8 defeat to the Maroons.
In truth, the game was decided in the first quarter. Auburn, whose only two losses of the season game to Baldwinsville in a five-day span right before it faced F-M flew out of the gate, the Hornets unable to settle down until it stared at a 5-1 deficit.
Over the course of the next two periods, every time the Hornets tried to make a run, the Maroons answered it. Thus, trailing 10-6 going to the fourth quarter, the Hornets’ late push fell just short, though Donovan Welsh still managed a three-goal hat trick.
Mac Fish and Tyler Papa each scored twice, with Dan Burnam picking up four assists. Luke Burnam and David Stegemann also had goals as defender Tom Angelicola contributed an assist of his own.
Dan Boshart finished with nine saves in the net, improving as the game went on. Auburn’s early work still held up, though, as Kaiden Tubbert, with five goals and one assist, led the way, with Jake Morin and Brian Cunnigham each earning two goals and two assists.
