The town of Cicero will play host this week to the 2014 Major Division Little League State Championship.
Games were set to start at 11 a.m. Monday and run through Saturday, July 26, at Cicero Central Park. Players ages 12 and under will compete for a chance at the New York State Little League Championship title. The tournament will include two games a day and will conclude with a championship game on Saturday (Sunday, if weather forces cancellations). The event also includes a picnic and a home run derby.
“Every year they have this in a different part of the state,” said George Lonergan, tournament organizer and president of the Cicero Little League. “Our league was selected as a finalist site along with a couple other leagues and we were chosen.”
The tournament will include six teams: Grand Island Little League from Erie County, Whitestown Little League from Oneida County, Colonie Little League from Albany County, Wappingers Falls Little League from Dutchess County, Throggs Neck Little League from the Bronx and East Meadow Little League from Nassau County.
The tournament is also hosted by New York State Little League District 8, which covers Onondaga and Oswego counties.
