Onondaga — Before it could go after the other main powers in Section III Class AA indoor track and field, Fayetteville-Manlus first had to handle the business of winning Wednesday night’s CNY Counties League American division championship meet at SRC Arena.
And the Hornets did so, picking up 165 points to nearly double up the total of runner-up Nottingham (89 points) in the boys league meet and then seeing the girls team earn 179 points to run away from Auburn (82 points) and the other challengers.
Bryan Geehrer needed 2:42.33 to hold off Auburn’s Buck Haines (2:45.66) in the 1,000-meter run, while Brendan Pearl was third in 2:54.41. Later, in the mile, Geehrer went 4:24.61 to win there, too.
In the 3,200-meter run, Patrick Perry, who was second in the mile (4:38.49) behind Geehrer, roared to victory in 9:45.09, pulling away from Max Perry (10:43.95) in the second spot. Sean Donlon, in 1:32.73, held off Jack Boltman (1:32.95) in yet another 1-2 finish in the 600-meter run.
F-M would sweep all three relays, starting in the 4×400, where Donlon, Boltman, Vincent Perry and Michael Young finished in 3:49.72 and beat the field by nearly half a minute. Boltman, Geehrer, Young and Patrick Perry won the 4×800 in 8:47.89.
Armando Adrian, Connor Florczyk, Peyton Burnett and Jack Griffo posted 1:37.50 in the 4×200 relay to fight off Auburn (1:38.38) by less than a second. Adrian got third place in the 300-meter dash in 39.49 seconds, with Florczyk fifth in 40.09 seconds as Burnett finished fifth in the 55-meter dash in 7.13 seconds.
Chibu Ezidiegwu won twice in field events. First, Ezidegwu was victorious in the triple jump thanks to a top attempt of 42 feet 5 inches, and he also cleared 5’10” to beat the field in the high jump, where teammate Romello Mitchell (5’4”) was third.
continued — Vincent Perry offered the only pole vault clearance of 10 feet. Griffo was second (39’2 ¼”) to Ezidegwu in the triple jump, and also earned third place in the long jump, going 18’11 ¼”, while Florczyk was fourth with a leap of 18’8 ½”. Jacob Rhea was sixth in the shot put, heaving it 34’7 ½”.
Palmer Madsen, in 10:48.61, beat out her sister, Reilly Madsen (11:04.89), to win the 3,000-meter run. Kaitlyn Neal ran the 1,000 in 2:58.79, with Phoebe White (3:06.58) the lone challenger, while Samantha Levy won the 1,500-meter run in 4:51.99 and Jenna Farrell was second in 4:59.28.
Sophie Ryan pulled away in the 600, winning in 1:39.47 as Christy Berge’ was second in 1;43.72. Then Ryan took second (44.34 seconds) in the 300 as Meaghan Howe got third place in 45.31 seconds after Berge’, Ryan, Phoebe Lindabury and Susan Bansbach pulled away and won the 4×400 relay in 4:13.98.
The Hornets won all three of the girls relays, too. Levy, White, Rebecca Walters and Claire Walters claimed the 4×800 relay in 9:45.18, and right after that, in the 4×200, Lindabury, Howe, Sydney O’Dell and Cady Barns went 1:52.36 to hold off Corcoran (1:52.57) and prevail here, too.
Barns went from there to winning the long jump with a leap of 16’1 ½”, while Febe Oley (14’9 ½”) got second place, with Barns third (31’4 ½”) and Oley fourth (30’10 ½”) in the triple jump. Sophia Jones had a 28-foot shot put toss and was second, close behind Corcoran’s Jalaysiah Lacey (28’3”) as Grace Hausladen gained fifth place.
Howe also was second in the 55 sprint in 7.79 seconds to Nottingham’s Nyazhia Rhodes (7.69 seconds). O’Dell was third (9.91 seconds) and Diana Devito fourth (10:23 seconds) in the 55-meter hurdles, with O’Dell clearing 4’6” to finish second to Auburn’s Marissa Netti (4’8”) in the high jump.
F-M will battle the likes of Cicero-North Syracuse (who won the boys and girls CNYCL National titles), Liverpool, West Genesee and Baldwinsville head-to-head this Wednesday night when they all return to SRC Arena for the sectional Class AA meet.
