Onondaga — Though it had to wait nearly two weeks, the Baldwinsville boys indoor track and field team proudly accepted top honors in a CNY Indoor Track Association meet named for a Bees legend.
Sunday’s John Arcaro Memorial Invitational at SRC Arena was supposed to take place Jan. 18, but got snowed out. Instead, it served as the appetizer for the busiest stretch of B’ville’s season that includes the CNY Counties League meet just three days later and, on Feb. 10, the Section III Class AA championships.
So it began with the Arcaro meet, and the boys Bees emerged with a victory in the afternoon session, earning 109 points to pull away from runner-up West Genesee, who had 58 points.
Ryan Delola got it started when he ran 3,200 meters in 10 minutes, 7.50 seconds, beating a field that included Ben Timmons, who was third in 10:49.17. Right after that, Evan Donhauser won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.04 seconds, half a second clear of Westhill-Bishop Ludden’s Bryan King (8.54 seconds) as Nate Cutie was sixth in 9.50 seconds.
Denis Keegan gained a third title when, in the 600-meter run, he went 1:28.46 to hold off Central Square’s Will Gordon (1:29.14) as Greg Porceng gave the Bees a third-place finish in 1:30.06.
B’ville piled up points in the mile, where Andrew Vanslyke was second in 4;56.12, just behind West Genesee’s Sean Byrnes (4:55.66) as Connor McManus finished third (4:59.31) and John Kresovich (5:05.83) took fourth place.
Kieren Sheriden was second (38.50 seconds) to Mexico’s Logan Burrows (37.76 seconds) in the 300-meter dash, right before Ethan Craig went 2:43.36 to finish runner-up to WG’s David Leff (2:38.25) in the 1,000-meter run.
In the 4×800 relay, Garrett Vannatta, George Kresovich, John Kresovich and Sam Bull made it to third place in 9:34.14. Cutie, Brandon Brown, Mike Lawrence and Judson Fletcher were third in the 4×200 in 1;43.26, while Andrew Guido, Sam Kellner, Broc Augustus and Evan DaPrano needed 3:56.17 to finish fourth in the 4×400 relay.
continued — Moving to field events, Nate Jaquint cleared 5 feet 8 inches in the high jump, second to Mexico’s Justin Gardner (5’10”). Austin Catalano recorded a fourth-place triple jump of 39’4 ½”, while Fletcher took fourth in the shot put, heaving it 39’2”.
While that was going on, the B’ville girls team also had a strong showing in the Arcaro meet, picking up 53 points to hold off Auburn (47 points) for the runner-up spot, though West Genesee, who finished with 124 points, routed the field.
Kelley Hull contended in the 1,000, earning second place in 3:09.82, inches behind WG’s Emily Young, who won in 3:09.57 as Mia Bolton got fifth place in 3:15.94. Anna Miller had a second-place shot put toss of 30’2”, trailing only the Wildcats’ J’Nazia Anderson (31’4”) as Brina Edmonds was fourth, heaving it 27’1 ½”.
Adriana Straughter cleared 4’8” in the high jump, putting her in third place as Hailey Couchman was fifth, clearing 4’6”. Sarah Rodman was third in the 3,000-meter run in 11:44.35, with Nadine Dickter fifth (12:36.66) and Megan Lockwood sixth (13:04.56). Sophie Simone took fourth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:26.04, where Leah Carpenter was seventh in 5:46.84.
Lockwood joined Madison Dickter, Leah Carpenter and Kayleigh Sattler to get fourth place in the 4×800 relay in 11;30.04.
