Cazenovia — Onondaga High School graduate and Onondaga Community College transfer Ryan Gavin (Syracuse) scored his 1,000th career point for the Cazenovia College Wildcats on Friday night. Prior to this milestone, Gavin recorded his 597th rebound on Thursday, Jan. 7, against Wells College to set the college’s all-time career rebounding record.
Despite an unexpected setback prior to his freshman season, Gavin remained focused on his goal of becoming a College basketball player. After being cut from the Onondaga Community College basketball program Gavin returned to the Lazers for his sophomore season more determined than ever. Following a successful season with the Lazers, Gavin transferred to Cazenovia College to complete his three remaining years of NCAA eligibility.
Since joining the Wildcats program in 2013-14, Gavin has led Cazenovia in points, rebounds and blocked shots each of his first two seasons, and remains on pace to be the statistical leader in each of those categories again this year. Gavin is also a two time All-Conference selection for the Wildcats who compete in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), earning a first team selection following the 2014-15 season. He was also named Cazenovia College’s Male Athlete of the Year following his junior season.
Gavin finished the 2014-15 season ranked sixth nationally in NCAA Division III in total double-doubles (17) and 10th in total rebounds (287). He continues his statistical prowess this season ranking 23rd in rebounds per game (10.8), 11th in total minutes played and 21st in the country in free throws made (89) and attempted (115).
Gavin’s play has also received national recognition earning him a selection to the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) Honors Court in 2014-15 for his commitment to excellence both on and off the court. A Business Management major at Cazenovia, Gavin has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher in each of his first two seasons, earning North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) scholar-athlete status.
