Baldwinsville — In no way did the effect of the Baldwinsville boys swim team’s first defeat of the season to Liverpool on Jan. 6 linger into future contests.
For when the Bees swam again at home against Auburn last Wednesday at the Baker High School pool, it lost most of the individual events, but used a series of second and third-place finishes to pile up points and eventually beat the Maroons 49-45.
B’ville did its major damage late in the meet, starting in the 500-yard freestyle, where Ryan Hiltbrand, in a time of five minutes, 20.86 seconds, took first place and gave the Bees some crucial points.
Right after that, John Sidorakis roared to victory in the 100 backstroke in 58.22 seconds and Nick Schultz won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.80, with Hiltbrand joining Dan Watkins, Ryan App and Kevin Atkinson as B’ville earned first place in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:37.13.
This string of wins overcame Auburn’s early success, which included Tyler Mason taking the 50 freestyle (23.73 seconds) and 100 butterfly (58.79 seconds), plus Jacob Whiting winning the 200 freestyle in 1;54.70 and needing 52.52 seconds to prevail in the 100 freestyle. The Maroons also prevailed in the 200 medley (1:49.60) and 400 freestyle (3:40.72) relays.
The win improved B’ville’s record to 5-1 as it goes to Le Moyne College Wednesday night to take on Cicero-North Syracuse.
