If all went to plan, the Skaneateles wrestling team would defeat Institute of Technology Central and a 35-year wait for an outright league championship would come to an end.
Weather that closed schools in the city of Syracuse made a hash of those plans, though, causing a postponement, and meaning the Lakers would have to wait a bit to have that clinching moment it so badly wanted.
It was clear, though, on Saturday, when Skaneateles ventured to Cornell University and took part in a meet against Moravia at the brand-new Friedman Wrestling Center, staying after the meet was done to watch Cornell defeat visiting Brown University in an Ivy League meet.
As for Skaneateles, it beat Moravia 65-21 to improve its head-to-head record to a perfect 15-0, claiming seven of the 10 contested bouts against the Blue Devils while also gaining four forfeits.
Following an opening forfeit to Hannah Drake (99 pounds), J.W. Simmons, at 106 pounds, won the first contested bout, pinning Marissa Kuhn in 1:25 before Christian Daley (113 pounds) finished off a 17-2 technical fall over Casey Smith early in the third period.
All told, Skaneateles won the first five bouts, with Nevan Rourke (120 pounds) gaining a forfeit before Joey Brillo, at 126 pounds, pinned Josiah Letts midway through the second period.
Matt Goetzmann (138 pounds) and Mike Goetzmann (145 pounds) both had second-period pins, with Matt getting his fall over Justin Searles and Mike going one second faster (3:17, to Matt’s 3:18) when he pinned Trent Friend.
One more streak started at 170 pounds with Ian Frackelton’s 54-second pin over Bernhard Lavendar. In between forfeits to Josh O’Hara (182 pounds) and Joey McIntyre (220 pounds), Pat Greenfield, at 195 pounds, pinned Josh Campenella midway through the third period.
When Skaneateles hosts Onondaga on Wednesday, some peewee matches will precede the varsity match. Then the Lakers host its annual dual meet Saturday, welcoming Auburn, Oneida, East Syracuse Minoa and Cato-Meridian.
