Strong and deep in most events, the Cicero-North Syracuse indoor track and field teams didn’t let anyone catch them during last Saturday’s afternoon session of the George Constantino Memorial Invitational at SRC Arena.
The boys Northstars piled up 120 points, nearly double the total of runner-up Baldwinsville (65 points), and while the girls event proved closer, C-NS won here, too, gaining 107 points to get past runner-up Jamesville-DeWitt (87 points) and 10 other sides.
C-NS got 20 points out of the boys 300-meter dash, where Matt Kilian won in 38.13 seconds, while Matt Williams was third in 38.44 seconds and Allen Garnes (38.77 seconds) got fourth place.
Williams and Garnes, paired with Ed Mahana and Zach Kennedy, won the 4×400 relay in 3;36.36, beating the field by more than 11 seconds. Another relay win was earned in the 4×200, where Kilian, Ryan Massena, Tyler Days and Anthony Pauli were victorious, edging out Henninger, 1:38.69 to the Black Knights’ 1:39.63.
George Reader had a strong showing, winning the high jump as the only competitor to clear 6 feet as Jason Hughes (5’6”) finished fourth. This followed a long jump where Reader, going 19’8 ½”, was second to Westhill-Bishop Ludden’ Alex Kiley, who went exactly 20 feet, as Days (19’ ½”) was fifth.
Mahana also was second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.49 seconds, with Ryan Williams third in 8.76 seconds and Hughes (9.03 seconds) in fifth place. Tyler Mosher, throwing the shot put 44’8”, was second to Nottingham’s Jaleel Barry, who had a big throw of 52’7”.

Meanwhile, in the girls meet, C-NS earned its first win the 55 hurdles, where Cassie Baldwin, in 9.20 seconds, pulled away from a pack that included teammate Brittany House, who was fifth in 9.77 seconds. Baldwin also was third in the long jump, going 15’4 ½” as Shayla Webb (14’10 ½”) gained fifth place.
But House would win, too, in the high jump, where her best clearance of 4’10” was two inches better than Baldwinsville’s Adrianna Straughter and Marcellus’ Mary-Catherine Coon. C-NS also went 1-2 in the shot put, where Destiny Monica won with a throw of 33’2 ½” and Kierrah Butler took second place, heaving it 30’9”.
Emily Dembkowski, with a clocking of 11:20.89, pulled away from West Genesee’s Kendall Dombroske (11:24.13) to win the 3,000-meter run, with Megan Trubia (11:56.53) settling into fifth place. Annina Marullo took second in the 1,000 in 3:15.33 and was fourth (5:12.23) in the 1,500-meter run, ahead of Julia Rupp (5:38.57) in sixth place.

Liverpool competed in the morning session of the Constantino meet, but some of its best athletes were at Cornell University’s Barton Hall, where the Southern Tier High School Invitational was taking place.
Between them, Terrell Coleman (2;40.34) and Steve Schulz (2:41.18) went 1-2 in the boys 1,000. Brandon Mayfield had a third-place time of 6.68 seconds in the 55 sprint and got eighth place in the long jump, while Ryan Comstock was fourth in the 3,200 in 10:04.76, with Ben Petrella fourth (1:27.34) in the 600 and Donald Frost seventh in the 300.
