Cicero — Now at the halfway mark of the regular season, the Baldwinsville ice hockey team is on a roll, having risen from a 2-2 start to win six consecutive games and rise to no. 12 in the first state Class AA rankings of 2016.
The Bees played just once last week, going to Cicero Twin Rinks to face Fayetteville-Manlius on Friday night and, after a bit of a quiet start, roaring to life in the second period to set the stage for a 6-2 victory over the Hornets.
Having not seen game action for nine days, B’ville required the first period to get back to full speed, but it didn’t cost too much as the Bees grabbed a 1-0 advantage.
What followed, in the second period, was more encouraging. Three goals broke the game open, and on the other end the defense was solid, too, never allowing F-M to score until the final period and protecting goaltender Alex Rose, who only had to make 11 saves.
Garrett Gray’s hot streak continued, as Gray scored twice and added a pair of assists. Zach Perez and Isaiah Pompo each had one goal and one assist, while Ben Dwyer got a pair of assists. Josh Racha and Noah Lindsay contributed single goals as Charlie Bertrand and Ryan Gebhardt each got an assist.
B’ville returns home to Lysander Arena Tuesday to face Rome Free Academy before a trip to a tournament in Ogdensburg that starts Friday with a game against Rochester McQuaid, a rematch of last March’s state Division I final won by the Knights at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
