During the 2015 portion of its schedule, the Skaneateles wrestling team faced 13 opponents – and beat them all.
To complete this perfect run, the Lakers went to Copenhagen High School for the Lewis County Duals Tuesday and won that event, sweeping all five of its matches and getting strong performances across its entire roster.
Skaneateles had not wrestled for 13 days, since a Dec. 17 win at Cazenovia. Still, the layoff did nothing to affect the Lakers, who opened the Lewis County Duals by defeating Lowville 52-30 and moving on to topple host Copenhagen by a similar 51-31 margin.
For its third match, Skaneateles faced Rome Free Academy, and bashed the Black Knights 62-23. A 72-15 romp over Watertown followed and, to close it out, the Lakers met South Lewis and turned back the Falcons by a 51-27 margin.
Pat Greenfield is still undefeated this winter, going to 16-0 with a sweep of all of his bouts at 195 or 220 pounds, though it was Joey McIntyre, switching between 182 and 195 pounds, earning his team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler honors with his own 5-0 mark in this meet.
Moving down to 99 pounds, J.W. Simmons won all five of his bouts, improving to 14-1 on the season, while Nevan Rourke’s 5-0 sweep at 120 pounds involved five straight pins. Joey Brillo, at 126 pounds, and T.J. Greenfield, who worked at 220 and 285 pounds, also recorded sweeps.
Other than a close decision, Mike Goetzmann did quite well at 145 and 152 pounds, going 4-1, while Christian Daley (113 pounds), Matt Goetzmann (138 pounds) and Ian Frackelton (170 pounds) had three wins apiece. Hannah Drake won twice at 106 pounds, as did Lucas Sherman (160 pounds) and Josh O’Hara (182 pounds).
To start 2016, Skaneateles will host Cato-Meridian next Wednesday night, followed by a Jan. 9 trip to the Mid-Winter Tournament at Port Byron.
