The Marcellus boys soccer team, who beat defending Section III Class B champion Skaneateles 2-1 earlier this season, would try to sweep the Lakers last Thursday night at Hyatt Stadium, but got run over in a 4-1 defeat to those Lakers.
Buoyed by the emotions of Senior Night, Skaneateles used goals by Graham McCarthy and Reggie Buell to gain a 2-0 halftime edge. Less than five minutes into the second half, Matt Benson made it 3-0, and though Ross Filtch broke up the shutout late in the game, Tristan Custer answered with 2:48 left to restore the three-goal margin. In defeat, goalie Ryan Rosenboomm made 12 saves.
Prior to that, the Mustangs handled Solvay 5-1, putting it away with a four-goal first-half blitz that negated the Bearcats’ lone tally by Sayf Karim. Five different Marcellus players –Filtch, Carter Austin, Mike Kent, Mike Melnyczuk and Doug LaPrease – had those five goals, with Noah LeFever adding two assists and Alec Stasyuk also getting an assist.
Making up a rained-out Sept. 29 game at Cazenovia on Saturday afternoon, Marcellus got a 1-0 victory when Kent netted a second-half goal to break up the scoreless duel. Rosenboom stopped all seven shots he faced in a hard-earned shutout.
Jordan-Elbridge sprung an upset bid on Skaneateles last Tuesday night, scoring twice early, but ultimately losing a 4-2 decision to the Eagles.
Russell Hines answered Matt Benson’s opening goal with a tying tally 15 seconds later, and then converted again off a feed from Matt Blumer to put J-E up 2-1 – all before the game hit the seven-minute mark. But the Eagles’ lead vanished when a foul inside the 18-yard box midway through the first half led to Tristan Custer’s converted penalty kick, and five minutes later Ryan Bailey put Skaneateles in front 3-2.
From there, the two sides settled down, J-E staying within range thanks to Max Bondgren’s seven saves, but Skaneateles not letting them catch up, and then tacking on a goal by Dylan Viscomi in the final minute of regulation.
J-E wasn’t as close in Thursday’s 6-2 loss to Cazenovia, Despite goals by Hines and Jakob Schwarting, assisted by Bennett Fraser and Bailey Bourque, the Eagles’ defense got overwhelmed as six different Lakers netted those six goals, with Ryan Modzeleski and Alex Pezzi each getting one goal and one assist to lead the visitors.
In Saturday’s 2-1 overtime defeat to Bishop Grimes, the Eagles played the Cobras to a 0-0 halftime tie. Hines found the net in the second half, but the Cobras’ Zach Schell answered with 4:03 left in regulation, and carried that momentum into the first OT period, where it took less than seven minutes for Mark Shattuck to beat Bondgren (who had six saves) for the game-winner.
Bishop Ludden returned to action last Wednesday and topped Faith Heritage 2-1. All of the goals were scored in the second half as Lucas Scutari netted one for the Gaelic Knights and assisted on Tom Muller’s tally. Brendan Downey earned the assist on Scutari’s goal, and each of Peter Lockwood’s eight saves proved important.
The Gaelic Knights also shut out Manlius-Pebble Hill 4-0 on Saturday afternoon, pulling away in the second half after owning a 1-0 halftime edge. Muller, Scutari, John Saleski and Eric Emmons had Ludden’s goals, with Brendan Downey, Justin Eisenhauer and Mack McCurn earning assists.
