As they do each April, the Skaneateles girls track and field team took part in a meet it co-hosts with Marcellus, though it’s held on the Mustangs’ home track. And the Lakers had plenty to be happy about from Saturday’s showing, capped by a sweep of the last two relay events.
In the 4×100, Amanda Wetmore, Laurel Parker, Katelyn Ellison and Angela Krause qualified in 52.23 seconds for the final, where they improved to 52.20 seconds and beat the runner-up, Corcoran (53.81), by more than a second and a half.
No heat was needed in the 4×400, where Skaneateles won again. Junior Olivia Gage, sophomore Shannan Roberts, freshman Mia Grasso and eighth-grader Cecilia Marrinan went 4:13.22, topping Schalmont (4:15.35) by more than two seconds for that top spot.
Junior Finan Malcolm got to second place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in exactly eight minutes, 37 seconds, trailing only Cicero-North Syracuse’s Madison Gross, who won in 8:28.77.
Gage had her own runner-up finish, in the 200-meter dash, where she posted 27.08 seconds to finish right behind Corcoran’s Patrice Williams (26.27 seconds). Mia Grasso got sixth place in 27.58 seconds, half a second behind Gage, but did better in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 8 inches to tie for third as teammate Aubreah Lynn tied for sixth.
During the 1,500-meter run, Kaitlyn Neal posted a time of 4:55.17, while Julia Willcox was fifth in 5:09.95. Each of them chased West Genesee’s fast freshman, Carly Benson, whose 4:41.84 was the quickest time in the state so far this spring. Neal also was fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:29.36, while Natalie Condon (2:37.18) was ninth.
Roberts roared to third place in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.47, just ahead of teammate Maddie Peterson (1:02.81) in fourth place as Schalmont’s Samantha Reagan won in 1:00.96.
Krause made her way to fourth place in the triple jump, her best attempt going 32’5 ½” Keely Gregg took fifth place in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet, while Nicole Bonocore was 11th in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:18.70.
Wetmore and Parker both made it to the 100-meter dash final. Though Parker qualified faster (13.66 seconds to 13.71), it was Wetmore taking fourth place in 13.37 seconds and Parker seventh in 13.71 seconds. Marcellus junior Mary Catherine Coon won in 13.16 seconds.
