The Cicero-North Syracuse girls track and field teams worked their way through raw, cold conditions and, getting three titles from Hannah Szumloz, rolled to a 102-38 victory over the Wildcats last Wednesday afternoon at Bragman Stadium.
Szumloz needed 16.6 seconds to earn first place in the 100-meter hurdles. Moving to field events, she went 15 feet 8 inches in the long jump and 31’9” in the triple jump for two more victories.
Elsewhere in field events, Nicole Herringshaw cleared 4’8” in the high jump, while Destiny Monica had a top shot put throw of 34’10” and Shannon Hanmer threw the discus 88’5” to win there.
Back on the oval, Javielle Fanizzi won twice, going 12.7 seconds in the 100-meter dash and adding a title in the 200-meter dash in 27 seconds flat. Madison Kolakowski went 1:12 flat to win the 400 hurdles, with Andrea Stout tearing to a time of 57 seconds in the 400-meter dash.
Beaten by WG in the distance races, C-NS countered in the 4×800 relay, where Kolakowski ran a leg and the Northstars prevailed in 10:53.0.
But that just began the Northstars’ work, as on Saturday it went to the Skaneateles-Marcellus Girls Invitational and recorded a series of high finishes.
C-NS went 1-2 in the shot put, where Monica had a top throw of 33’2 ¼” and Hanmer finished second with a toss of 32’7 ¾”. Hanmer got second place in the discus with a throw of 92’1” as Holland Patent’s Harley Buczkowski (95’10”) prevailed.
In the high jump, Herringshaw cleared 5’1”, the same as East Syracuse-Minoa’s Nina Zesky, but did so with fewer misses to take the title as Brittany House, clearing 4’8”, tied for fifth after a sixth-place effort in the 400 hurdles.
House, Hannah Szumloz, Hannah Nickels and Sasha Pulaski took third in the 4×100 relay in 53.55 seconds, with Marie LeRoy, Rachel Wisely, Kristin Schug and Abbey Szumloz went 4:25.67 in the 4×400 relay to finish fourth.
Fanizzi had a top long jump of 16’ 1/4”, second only to ESM eighth-grader Mia Montgomery, who won with 16’1 ¾”. Szumloz also was fifth in the triple jump, going 31’3 ½”, this after taking fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.91 seconds, just ahead of House (18.13 seconds) in fifth place.
Jacqlynn Halstead needed 2:27.09 to finish third in the 800-meter run, with Taylor Parry fourth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:59.21. Amanda Shuman took seventh (5:33.60) in the 1,500. Halstead, Lauren Carr, Maria LaMontagne and Haiely Pestle were fifth (10:51.15) in the 4×800 relay.
Whitney Hotchkiss was ninth in the pole vault and Savannah Stevens ran to ninth in the 3,000-meter run. Taylor McLaughlin was ninth in the 200-meter dash and Andrea Stout ninth in the 400 sprint.
A day earlier, the C-NS boys team finished second in the Cook-DiStefano Relays at Utica Proctor’s D’Allesandro Stadium, earning 116 points as New Hartford, with 138 points, finished on top.
Joe Castaldo’s top shot put toss of 50’6 ½” led to a combined title with Ross Mathewson as they threw 90’8” between them. In the discus, Castaldo won with 135’8”, with Mathewson getting a top throw of 118 feet and Logen Lickfield going 113’6”. Bryan Bausinger, Paul DeGennaro, Eric Bowen and Andrew Bearkland won the mile relay in 19:37.84.
The Northstars were second in the 110 hurdles in a combined 39.21 seconds, unner-up in the 3,200-meter run and second in the pole vault, while also taking third in the 200, 400 sprint, 400 hurdles, long jump, high jump and 800, and fourth in the 100 and triple jump. C-NS managed third-place finishes in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relays, too.
