You may not have known that up until just recently, the village of Fayetteville did not own Brooklea Drive.
At its meeting on Dec. 17, the Fayetteville Village Board voted to accept a resolution by Onondaga County dedicating Brooklea Drive — excluding the bridge over Limestone Creek — to the village. The county’s resolution was made at the request of the village.
Department of Public Works Superintendent Jim Craw said the village already plows the road, but will have to pick up the maintenance work that has been done by the county.
“It’s mostly blacktop, because we already stripe it ourselves,” he said. “The only thing the county owned was from white line to white line. What you drove on. Then we owned all the parking areas next to it.”
The transfer of ownership simplifies the process of how the road will be maintained. Craw said the last time the county paved Brooklea Drive, his department had to come up with $20,000 in order to pave the adjacent parking areas to match it.
Mayor Mark Olson said the move also means one less step in the permitting process for planned renovations to Limestone Plaza, which will be funded by a $360,000 county Save the Rain grant.
