Art for Kids—Tomb Painting: An Exploration of the Art of Ancient Egypt.
1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5. Registration required.
Pat Hill and Jenna Wright-Martin are calling all kids ages 8 to 14 to the library community room for the third installment of this year’s “Art for Kids” program. Who painted the tombs of Ancient Egypt? What types of paints did they use? To explore these questions and more, children will view a number of tomb-related artifacts in the Museum’s Egyptian Room and then create an Egyptian-style tomb painting to take home.
Tomb paintings, designed to assist the dead in the afterlife, were of great cultural significance. The tomb wall was prepared for painting with a thin layer of plaster, sanded until smooth and shiny, and then scenes drawn on papyrus were recreated by highly trained artisans under the supervision of a master craftsman.
The artisans’ color choices carried great symbolic significance for the ancient Egyptians. Blue, for example, represented the sky, water, the heavens, rebirth and creation. And while black, red, yellow, brown, blue and green pigments were featured prominently, the Egyptian artisans used their expert skill to mix a variety of paint shades.
To ensure program quality, class size is limited. Stop by or call the library at 655- 9322 to reserve a spot.
