Baldwinsville’s The Energy Lounge is one of several spots in Central New York where Tibetan Buddhist monks from the historic Gaden Shartse Monastery will be visiting next weekend. The eight-day tour also includes stops in Liverpool, Manlius, Cazenovia and Syracuse.
Energy Lounge owner Andrea Gagas will host the monks for private healing sessions as well as to create a sand mandala, a geometric figure that represents the universe in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism.
“Mandala means literally, ‘that which extracts the essence,’ said Gagas, explaining that there are many different types used by Tibetan Buddhists and can be created in either two or three dimensions. “The ones on the monks’ tour will be two‑dimensional sand mandalas. These are without doubt the most creative, labor‑intensive, and concentration‑intensive of all mandalas created.”
The construction of the Four Armed Chenrezig (Buddha of Compassion) sand mandala will begin on Sunday, Nov. 3 and continue through Tuesday Nov. 5. The dissolution ceremony, when the mandala is ritualistically destroyed, will take place on Nov. 5. The public is welcome to attend. Gagas asks that those interested in watching the dissolution ceremony call the day before for the specific time.
Private healing sessions last 30 minutes and suggested donations are $75 per session. The Nov. 1 slots have already been filled but more sessions are available on Nov. 3, Gagas said. Additionally, The Energy Lounge is accepting $100 sponsorships, and as a gift for the contribution, sponsors are invited to join the monks for dinner on Monday, Nov. 4 at The Energy Lounge. Tabitha’s in Baldwinsville is donating the dinner. Business and or individuals are welcome. Ten spots are still available.
“We are very honored and blessed to share in this moment,” Gagas said.
