To the editor:
My name is Paul Schmid from Boy Scout Troop 119. I learned of a forgotten cemetery in a residential neighborhood near Speach Drive off of Route 31. I decided my Eagle Scout project was to build a memorial to honor the veterans buried in the cemetery.
I worked with the Baldwinsville VFW Post 153 to get all the permits needed build to build the memorial. I then started getting all the information I could about the cemetery and the veterans buried there with the help of our town historian Bonnie Kisselstein. I learned that there are veterans dating back to the Revolutionary War.
The VFW donated an old rusty flagpole that I refurbished with the help of my troop. I then made the sign with a laser cutter in my tech class and reused the old flagpole’s base to secure the signage.
I received almost $500 in donated materials from Lowes on Route 31 and Ace Hardware, which helped me to complete my memorial on Aug. 27.
I also have a flag donated that has been flown over Congress for the official flag raising ceremony that will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18.
Members from VFW Post 153, the American Legion and Daughters of the American Revolution will be in attendance.
I would to invite the public, fellow veterans or anyone in the area who may have relatives buried in the cemetery to join us.
Paul Schmid
