To the editor:
For anyone that has followed Lysander politics over the last four tumultuous years, the perception of an argumentative, defensive, unprofessional and even rude town board has clearly been seen by the residents of the Baldwinsville community. It appears that all of that negativity seems to have vanished when Councilor Moore, Councilor Ellis and Supervisor Saraceni joined Councilor Diamond and Councilor Geraci on the town board.
The new administration appears to be tirelessly working towards changing the negative perception that has clouded the Lysander town hall during the previous administration. Supervisor Saraceni has extended the public comment period during town board meetings, relaxing unnecessary restrictions of the previous board. Councilor Diamond has reintroduced the idea that the meetings prior to a board meeting, commonly referred to as “work sessions,” should now recorded for the public — which the board, thankfully, has finally begun to do. It’s refreshing to see a new professionalism in government which stands on behalf of the people.
Following, I appreciate the independent thought and healthy debate on issues that come before the Lysander Town Board. After watching the July 25 town board Meeting on PAC-BTV, I want to thank Councilor Diamond for expressing his concerns; Councilor Diamond stated “[He] was concerned that if the town board approved the incentive zoning Cabbage Patch proposal it would create a precedent, allowing developers an opportunity to offer a cash sum to the town in exchange for the town board changing the density in certain areas of the town.”
I remember following this issue last year and I share Councilor Diamond’s concerns; after he finished explaining his apprehension he was, sadly, the single “no” vote for the Cabbage Patch proposal. While I disagree with this particular decision the board has made, I find it comforting that we can come together and, as a community, work out a result democratically and amicably. That being said, I would still like to applaud Councilor Diamond for championing another perspective on this issue for an added depth, just as the rest of the board will continue to do in the future.
I have been following these issues closely because local government effects my life, and I’d rather it be impacted positively. I am affected by these increases in development, and the consequent increase in traffic that inexorably flows into our community. I would like to thank the new board for all of their work, and thank Councilor Diamond for sharing my concerns.
