To the editor:
As many of you already know, Barb Bartlett, director at the Lorenzo State Historic Site, retired at the end of February. For over 14 years, Barb worked tirelessly to make Lorenzo the significant local treasure that we all know it to be. From unique and relevant programming meant to engage many different ages and palates, to fun and cultural community events Cazenovia has come to enjoy year after year, Barb made it her mission to develop a seasonal schedule with wide appeal.
Most of us have at least a story or two of a memorable afternoon spent in the beautiful historic gardens, or perhaps you and your family spread out a blanket on the sweeping lawn of the estate to listen to world class music or watch a spectacular performance of some kind. Maybe you visited the mansion during the Christmas season and were delighted not only by the décor but also the music and entertainment. Rest assured that these traditions will continue.
Stephanie Chapin, newly appointed park manager, has been at the site for over two years in her previous role as park supervisor. She is an enormous asset for Lorenzo and will be in charge of day-to-day operations and projects at the estate. Although Barb’s role at Lorenzo was much different, we can be certain that the site will run as usual for the foreseeable future.
From the programming and events end of things, the Friends of Lorenzo will hold its regular annual events like the Garden Gala, Community Day, Christmas Preview Party, etc. Many other community events like the Lorenzo Driving Competition, CAVAC Arts and Crafts Fair, Eurocar Show, etc. will go on as expected, too.
The Office of New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is working closely with the Bureau of Historic sites to find a replacement for Barb. We are looking forward to welcoming this individual who will no doubt bring their own creative vision to the job.
Barb, we wish you the best with your future endeavors and we truly appreciate all you’ve done while Lorenzo has been under your care.
We would also like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to everyone who helped make the Bootleggers’ Ball the enormous success it was. Guests dressed in 1920s attire arrived at the “speakeasy” where they were transported to the Prohibition era. Local distilleries were on hand to serve their special concoctions, including one made in honor of Barb — appropriately named “The Bartlett.” The Maria DeSantis band entertained for the evening and the dance floor was packed. Gaming tables, a photo booth and dance demos rounded out the evening. All proceeds from the fundraiser go toward helping the Friends financially support the Lorenzo State Historic Site. Again, our sincere gratitude for a very memorable evening.
