LIVERPOOL — Summer 2021 will be the season to begin enjoying reading all over again.
Everybody in the community who can get their name on a certificate and put their heart into a pledge is invited to join Let’s Read, Liverpool!
This new take on a summer reading celebration was born through a conversation by Liverpool Public Library and Liverpool Central School District librarians Joellyn Murry and Kay Budmen.
This summer that follows more than year of altered lives because of COVID-19 deserved something special, they decided.
“As we were beginning to plan our summer reading, Kay and I both agreed that during this past year of hybrid learning and quarantines, children and adults had lost the joy of reading for pleasure,” Murry said. “Not only that, but no one seemed interested in having another form to fill out or having to log reading. As we talked, we came up with idea of encouraging our community, children and adults, to pledge to read. No minutes to log, or pages read or book titles. We just want our community members to read however much fits into their life while they enjoy the summer weather and a slow return to normalcy.”
LPL programmers then built a summer full of events and activities that celebrate the joy of reading and discovery. A commitment to in-person activities on the Dinosaur Garden lawn includes a couple of family blockbusters, including a visit from folks from downtown’s The MOST for Tale of Tails on July 1, and The All-American Dinosaur Show on Aug. 5.
Before those, though, come a series of kickoffs for Let’s Read, Liverpool! Our staffers will bring pledges to sign, prizes to award, knowledge to share and fun to be had at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 26, on the Dinosaur Garden lawn, and from 10 a.m. to noon and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 28, at Johnson Park and on the lawn, respectively.
The diverse collection of events, for all ages, can be found on the LPL.org calendar page (lpl.org/events/programs-and-events/events-calendar).
More about Let’s Read, Liverpool! can be found on its own page at Summer Celebration 2021 page at lpl.org/events/programs-and-events/summercelebration/. There you will find how to tell us how you’ve pledged with just a click, and how you can share your summer fun by sending us photos, too.
Expect to see our staffers around the community a lot this summer, sharing the love of reading.
