Question: It’s that time of year again when a new school year starts. Do you recognize these individuals who in past years gave so much to the education of pupils in the district? They were all honored with having a building named after them. What were their various positions?
Last week’s answer: The late Mark Chapman took this photo in 1900 when workmen were laying track for the coming of the trolley. Scenes like this were happening all over town.
If you look carefully you should recognize at least one window — the curved one. The location is south of the Seneca River Bridge between it and Meadow Street. You may not fully recognize it as the buildings in the background beyond the curved window have been removed. Remember that another major change took place in this location between 1908 and 1910 when the Barge Canal was dug. If a photo was taken today, the Barge Canal Bridge would be seen in the upper right.
The last two buildings in the background were on opposite corners of Meadow and Syracuse streets. The one on the left was the Quinlan Hotel, which sat where the east side of the Barge Canal Bridge is now; the farthest one was where the parking lot next to Meadow Street is today. It housed the Union Carriage Works run by Joseph Fugette.
The most visible buildings — the one on the left and the one with the curved window — are where The Suds Factory River Grill and The Chef & The Cook are now located.
