In Cazenovia, snow is glistening. Maybe a little too much some days and not enough other days, but hey, at least we get to ski this year.
I bet you are wondering why I’m writing again. Fair question. I did something on an impulse, but at this point, I realize it was a very powerful life lesson. You see, I wrote an article and a few people didn’t agree. They didn’t like it. So, I got hurt and I was upset that readers voiced their opinions to me. I chose to close myself off and end my column because local people didn’t like what I wrote.
After time, I realized, I did the wrong thing. As a writer, there will always be critics. In life, there will always be bullies. I want to be able to encourage anyone to pursue your passion and not give up, even when obstacles arise. While believing that, in the complete opposite direction, I gave up. I gave up because people didn’t like me. I gave up a passion, I gave up a hobby, I gave up business relationships and I gave up on myself … because people didn’t agree with my thoughts.
Given the current situation not only in town, but in America, I was wrong for giving up. I should hold strong to what I believe in and not give in to the “bullies” that don’t appreciate my point of view. Not everyone will get along. (Unless we have achieved world peace since I submitted this article.)
I am simply saying, for the holidays, sometimes the best gift is one you can give yourself. It is extremely valuable. It’s called self-worth. It can’t be bought. It can’t be read in a book or figured out in yoga or soul cycle. In my opinion, it comes when you need it and when it is necessary. I suggest watching “Frozen” and listening to “Let It Go” on repeat for a while. Then maybe you will get the idea.
To be honest, I loved writing my column. I enjoyed sharing my opinions, interviewing people and collaborating on town and village topics, and I missed it once it was gone. So, I took action. I had a good talk with my editor and explained that this is my passion. Although I would love a white Bentley with tan interior for Christmas, a new pair of Tom Ford sunglasses or a day where I am strictly only allowed to eat Italian food … I would choose this column over any of those. It’s an expression of myself and it’s a look into what the residents of Cazenovia are thinking and feeling.
That being said, I encourage all of you to continue to read my column. If you disagree, that’s okay! In fact, it helps me to see different local points of view, which I think is wildly pertinent.
I will cover not only my opinion, but anyone who approaches me and wants their word spoken by me … bring it on! I will discuss the new buildings and the old. I will host topics like weather, food (obviously), entertainment and future planning for the area. I am on your side. You may not be on mine, but give me a shot. Not of alcohol, but of faith.
In closing, Merry Christmas … to me. I got my love back! See you next week! See you next week with a fun re-cap of the local drama that took place in 2016. (Sarcasm included as usual.) Happy Holidays!
