Sometimes, the easiest way to lend a hand is to extend an arm. That’s the philosophy behind my annual Lifesavers Blood Drive, and on Tuesday, July 19, I’ll be hosting the 10th anniversary event to help raise awareness, prevent blood shortages and give community members the opportunity to save a life this summer.
I first learned about the importance of blood donation by watching my father host an annual drive in the nearby village of Clyde. For 25 years he worked to combat blood shortages that could mean the difference between life and death for a neighbor in need. Then, one day, the tables turned: He needed a blood transfusion during open heart surgery. And because of generous people like my father, blood was there when he needed it most.
It’s in his honor, and that of the many other community members who both give and need blood, that I continue to host the Lifesavers Blood Drive today. The event is especially important during the summer months when, all too often, there’s a shortage in blood reserves and a decline in donation rates.
While blood donation is a safe and simple process, it’s important to know your eligibility. Blood donors must:
- be at least 17 years old;
- weigh at least 110 pounds;
- have a clean bill of health; and
- answer a questionnaire to help ensure all health requirements are met.
With more and more people experiencing blood loss after working or playing in the hot sun, we must take immediate action to replenish our local blood supply. Residents generously stepped up and donated 118 units of blood last year, and this year, we’re hoping to break that record and collect 150 units. Altogether, that would bring us to 1,000 lifesaving units of blood collected over ten years. I hope you’ll help us reach our goal by donating blood this summer.
The 10th annual Lifesavers Blood Drive will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Driver’s Village, 5885 E. Circle Drive in Cicero. In addition to blood donation, the drive will feature dozens of great prizes, live music and refreshments. If you would like to register beforehand, or if you have any questions about this or any other community issue, please contact my office at [email protected] or 452-1115.
