Rocco Nalli, Baldwinsville School District’s director of special education, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the NYCASE Special Education Administrator of the Year Award.
Nalli was recently honored at the organization’s Annual Summer Institute in Syracuse.
When asked what this acknowledgment means to him, Nalli admits that it is hard to articulate how it feels to be honored in this special way.
“I am proud of everything we have done at the Baldwinsville School District. It’s an amazing experience to be honored with this award surrounded by my peers and colleagues. It is something I will always cherish,” Nalli said.
The CASE Outstanding Administrator of Special Education Award was instituted for recognition of individuals making significant professional contributions to leadership behavior and field practice in the administration of programs for students with disabilities and/or who are gifted, according to casecec.org.
Nalli’s professional achievements reflect this honor.
Throughout his career, he has consistently supported inclusive practices for all students with disabilities.
Nalli has encouraged teamwork and expectations for, not only students with disabilities but every student to create a positive environment and greater success for students in the district.
Nalli shared how proud he is of the support the Baldwinsville district has provided students with disabilities, while also making them feel like they belong.
He explains the importance that all students should be exposed to various types of learning abilities. It teaches appreciation and acceptance for others.
Nalli shared an example of Baldwinsville’s philosophy to promote the inclusion of all learning styles.
“The varsity football team practices on the same day as our extended school year’s special education summer school program,” he said. “The players welcomed the students to watch them practice, get on the field, and score touchdowns. It’s amazing to see these football players beautifully interacting with the students and giving them this awesome experience. It’s beneficial for everyone.”
Nalli’s strong leadership role with SUPAC, parental support, the goal to improve IEP development and incorporate self-directed individual education plans (IEPs), consistent professional development for staff, and many other achievements inspire and promote a positive future for all students.
His implementation of co-teaching models and leadership with NYCASE and National CASE have also contributed to his personification of the New York Council of Administrators of Special Education Administrator of the Year Award.
Nalli was nominated by Karrie LaMacchia, director of pupil and personnel services.
He was also selected for the Special Education Administrator of the Year by the New York Council of Administrators of Special Education (NYCASE).
“The Baldwinsville school district was able to forge ahead due to Rocco’s leadership and ability to be solution focused and child centered,” LaMacchia said. “Over the years he has moved this district ahead in promoting inclusion, equity for students with disabilities and promotion of self directed IEPs.
Although Rocco will truly be missed, I find comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue to live on and is well embedded within the special education programs and philosophy in Baldwinsville School District.”
Nalli was among a select pool of highly qualified and highly regarded special education administrators from across New York State who were nominated for this prestigious career achievement award.
“I’m retiring soon, so what a wonderful way to end my career and be honored this way,” Nalli shared.
