Fire damages marching band shed at Baker High School in Baldwinsville

BALDWINSVILLE — A fire broke out behind Baker High School the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 14, damaging a storage shed containing props belonging to the Marching Bees.

The Onondaga County Fire Investigation unit and Baldwinsville Police Department continue to investigate the cause.

Baldwinsville Police Lt. Mike Lockwood said surveillance video did not show anyone near the shed in the time period leading up to the fire, and investigators believe the fire was accidental.

“It’s not [of a] suspicious nature,” Lockwood said. “It seems something inside or near the shed spontaneously combusted.”

Joe DeBarbieri, then interim superintendent of the Baldwinsville Central School District, released a statement about the fire Aug. 16.

“Band materials and props were lost in the fire but the band’s actual storage shed was saved. Fortunately, a person walking their dog noticed the fire and called 911. Had the fire department not arrived when they did, the band’s storage shed would have been lost to the fire,” DeBarbieri said. “We are grateful that no one was hurt, and we are very thankful for the first responders and firefighters.”

Band Director Casey Vanderstouw was not available for comment.
