The Chittenango Science Olympiad Team started preparing last August for the 2018 Regional Competition and the efforts paid off on Saturday, Jan. 27, as they placed fifth overall earning a bid to the New York State Tournament.
“Seven Year Senior” Trevor Crystal, who has participated in the Olympiad since sixth grade, capped off his Regional Level Science Olympiad career going 5 for 5 on the day along with earning a Gold Medal in Optics.
Six other seniors also contributed outstanding performances with Ben Cyr also 5 for 5, while Lucas Spiridilozzi, Coralee Everett, Alex Drake and Caleb Seale all earned medals in multiple events.
Caleb Seale overcame last minute winding issues to defend his title as CNY Helicopter Champion, earning Gold with a record setting flight time of over two minutes.
The 26 events include everything from Anatomy and Astronomy to Hovercraft and Mousetrap Cars and challenge students to master all areas of STEM. Team members earned medals in 18 of the 26 events on the day.
The seniors along with underclassmen Hannah Butler, Zoe Sauve, Annie Vigliotti, Dan Simmons, Elliot O’Connell, Tyler Falkenburg, Sarah Vigliotti, Leah DeMauro, and Marilla Bongiovanni will continue building, testing and studying as they prepare to compete against the top 50 teams in in New York State in early March.
