To the editor:
In a time when we are hyper-aware of the importance of nutrition for our families, I would like to suggest that the school districts consider offering healthier food options at their athletics concession stands. As a parent of a former football, track and lacrosse player I know too well how our students’ sports events often occur during meal times. Sports families and non-athlete student attendees are often faced with having to select either a “cheese” covered pretzel, a slice of pizza or a hotdog to satisfy our hunger. Snack offerings are equally unhealthy with candy bars, flavored potato chips or cookies. I think the community would benefit from choices that promote healthier eating habits. I believe there is a demand for items such as fresh fruits, trail mixes, baked whole grain chips, low-fat yogurts, salads and lean meat wraps.
