Gary Robert Holmes, 70, of New Woodstock, passed away suddenly at his home on Aug. 18, 2021. He was born Nov. 4, 1950, in Syracuse to Robert and Eleanor Holmes, as the third of four children– Lonnie, Jeannie, and Ronnie. Gary is also survived by his wife, Libby (Graves), his lifelong partner of 45 years. They built their beloved log home together in 1987 and had two children, Althea and Matthew. Gary took great pride in being a grandfather to young Arlo. He has many living family members and would joke that he’s related to everyone in town.
Gary was a jack of all trades, very accomplished with woodworking, mechanics, landscaping and home repairs. He was always curious and learning, forever working on a never-ending list of projects. His homemade gifts were legendary. He found great joy in golf, bowling, Christmas-time, walking in the woods, and picking more berries than his wife could possibly preserve. His favorite place in the world was the family camp on DeRuyter Lake, where he cherished time spent with his ever-growing and loving family. He often remarked there was nowhere more beautiful than CNY, which he knew intimately and loved exploring. He rejoiced in the everyday accomplishments of his family members and let his pride show. Gary was sentimental and thoughtful, always looking for ways to help anyone with anything. He will be sorely missed by all those lucky enough to have known him.
A brief service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4, at Michael E. Brown Funeral Services, 2333 Fenner Road in Cazenovia. A Life Remembrance will occur afterward at the family camp on DeRuyter Lake, where all are welcome to share their stories, eat, drink, and be merry. Both events will be very casual attire, as Gary hated wearing a suit. Condolences for the Holmes family may be left at michaelebrownfuneralservices.com.
