Rose L. Ryan, a lifelong resident of Cazenovia, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2020, during a short stay at St. Camillus Rehab. She was 101. She was a beloved mother and Nana who adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was born in Pompey, on May 12, 1918, to Mary and Richard Long, the sixth of eight siblings. She graduated from SUNY Cortland at the age of 20 and started her career as a teacher in a one room schoolhouse in Jamesville. She proudly left her teaching position to go join the war effort in Buffalo, working at Bell Aircraft during WWII. Rose went back to teaching and retired from Cazenovia Junior High School where she taught seventh grade English for several years.
Rose was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Cazenovia. She was also a member of Cazenovia Library, past member of Cazenovia Golf Club, and belonged to a bridge club for many years. She was an avid Syracuse Orange fan and New York Yankees fan, never missing a televised game.
Rose is survived by her sister, Liz Jenner of Trumansburg, N.Y.; son Patrick (Mary) Ryan of Syracuse, daughter Marie (Charles) Settembrini of Orlando, FL son Richard (Kathy) Ryan of Easton PA; six grandchildren: Melanie (Brad) Johnson, Laura (David) Webster-Gardiner, Richard Ryan, Thomas Ryan, Paul Ryan and Joseph Ryan; 3 great- grandchildren: Layla, Verity and Thomas Webster-Gardiner, as well as many Nieces and Nephews. Rose was predeceased by her husband Patrick H. Ryan (1990) and siblings John Long, Marie Reynolds, Catherine Healy, Donald Long, Richard Long, and Paul Long.
Arrangements by Ayer and Zimmer Funeral Home. Services are private due to Covid 19. A Celebration of Life service to be announced at a later date. Donations may be made In Rose’s name to CAVAC, Cazenovia Library , or St. James Church.
Nana’s favorite saying was, “You are never alone if you have a good book.”
