Dr. Conrad Joseph Kubiniec, 79, passed away on March 18, 2017, at the Syracuse VA Medical Center Hospice, surrounded by his family after a valiant three-month battle with cancer.
He was born on March 30, 1937, in North Tonawanda, N.Y., the son of the late Charles F. and Cecelia (Young) Kubiniec.
He graduated from North Tonawanda High School in 1954. He was a proud member of the University of Buffalo Dental School Class of 1961. Conrad went on to serve his country as an officer and dentist in the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Conrad returned to Western New York and opened his dental practice in Batavia. He practiced dentistry for 40 years, the last 10 with his son, Michael. While a Dentist, he was elected into the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an International Honorary Dental Organization. He was a member of the Tri-County Dental Society and the 8th District Dental Society.
Along with his successful dental practice, he was a member of The Batavia Lions Club, The Batavia Rotary Club and The Batavia Club. He sang tenor in the Genesee Chorale and appeared in numerous Rotary Shows. He served on the board of directors of the Batavia YMCA and AAA of Western New York. Upon retiring to St. Augustine Fla., he was an active member of St. Augustine’s Sunshine Rotary Club and the St. Augustine Bridge Club. He spent his summer months in Cazenovia.
Conrad was rich with avocations. He was an American Contract Bridge Life Master. He was an avid long distance runner and completed two Skylon Marathons in Niagara Falls. He ran for years with the Batavia Sunday Morning Running Club. As an accomplished lifelong bowler, he achieved his goal of completing a sanctioned 300 game. He was a Master Gardener in the Cornell Cooperative Extension in New York and The University of Florida Cooperative Extension in Florida. He voluntarily tended plantings and community gardens in Batavia and at the St. Augustine Bridge Club and helped family, friends and neighbors with plans, plants and labor.
Conrad married Ann O’Grady Kubiniec of Cuba, N.Y., in 1959. They shared 57 years of marriage and, together, they raised three children.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Dr. Michael (Sharon) Kubiniec of Batavia, Thomas (Juliet) Kubiniec of Cazenovia and Katherine (Kenneth) Dunn of Danvers, MA. He was the beloved “Grandpa Alligator” to Austin, Robert and Thomas Kubiniec of Batavia, Colton, Hailey and Charles Kubiniec of Cazenovia, and Madelyn, Kenneth Conrad and Garrett Dunn of Danvers, MA. He is also survived by his sister Dr. Cathleen (James) Morano of New Britain, PA and two brothers, Charles “Chip” (Janice) Kubiniec of North Tonawanda and Craig (Mary Anne) Kubiniec of St. Petersburg, Fla., and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A spring memorial service will be held in Batavia on Earth Day, April 22. Further details will be announced. Memorials may be made to the Richmond Memorial Library, Cazenovia Public Library or St. John’s County Library in St Augustine. There would be no greater memorial than in lieu of sending flowers, to please plant some.
