Arline Vernet, a resident of East Falmouth, MA since 1974, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, at Bourne Manor Extended Care Facility. Born Arline Hope Capace in Providence, RI in 1918, she married Richard Wallace Vernet and lived in the Providence area until the early 1950s when she and her husband, a World War II veteran, relocated to Skaneateles, where she resided until his death in 1974. She then moved to the Cape to be closer to her daughter, Marcia, and grandson, Joshua Hexter. While in Skaneateles, Arline was extremely active in St. James Episcopal Church, serving on the Altar Guild, as a Sunday school teacher and she was a delegate to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in 1964 in Seattle. In addition, she was very involved in the Civil Rights Movement which shaped our country in the early 1960s.
Once relocating to Falmouth, Arline was employed for many years at Falmouth Human Services and was a proud member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. In 1996, at the age of 78, she was the General Contractor of her own “in-law addition” to her daughter’s and son-in-law’s home on Tamarack Road in East Falmouth, where she continued to live until this past February. One of Arline’s crowning achievements was the recent completion of her “Memoirs” with the assistance of her dear friend Dolores Lacasse Ryan, chronicling a life of nearly 100 well-lived years.
Mrs. Vernet is survived by her daughter, Marcia Donovan, and her husband, Michael, of East Falmouth, MA, and her grandson, Joshua Hexter, of Durham, NC and his wife, Courtney, and Arline’s great-grandsons – Evan, Christopher & Nicholas. She also leaves her sister, Shirley Erickson of East Greenwich, RI and many nieces and nephews in the Warwick, RI area. A memorial service will be held at St Barnabas Episcopal Church, Falmouth, MA, at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23.
