Shirley Culver Palmer, of 2609 Oran Delphi Road, Pompey, passed away Thursday evening, April 28, 2016, at Iroquois Nursing Home. On July 29, 1924, she was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank R. Culver in East Quogue, N.Y.. Fate played a role in 1940 at Westhampton Beach High School, when Shirley walked down the aisle at graduation, with Fred G. Palmer, Jr. Their second walk down the aisle was in 1946 at their wedding in the Methodist Church of East Quogue. Four years later Shirley received her Bachelor of Science degree from New Paltz College, where her granddaughter, Liz Palmer, is a member of the Class of 2017. Since there was a severe shortage of teachers, due to World War II, Shirley was 20 when she began her teaching career in Westhampton Beach, N.Y. While residing in New Jersey, she taught many years at the Barclay Farms Elementary School in Cherry Hill and Brookside Elementary School in Allendale. Upon their move to Upstate New York, Shirley continued her love of teaching for another 30 years at Pleasant Street Elementary Eagle Hill Middle School in Manlius.
As a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia, Shirley served on the Board of Deacons and was a member of the Leonard Circle. Throughout the years, she enjoyed her memberships in the Lincklaen Assembly, the Cazenovia Club and the Shakespeare Club of Cazenovia.
Shirley was predeceased by her loving husband Fred of 56 years and her beloved daughter Cynthia P. Davis. She is survived by daughter, Susan Palmer Everly of Cazenovia, son, Fred G. Palmer III, Esq., and his wife Irene Shea Palmer of New Woodstock and son-in-law Charles Davis II of Cazenovia. Nana adored her six grandchildren: Bridget Everly Hamill (Dr. Mark), Patrick T. Baker, Fred G. Palmer IV, Elizabeth A. Palmer, Charles Davis III, Wesley P. Davis (Sayuri), and two great-grandchildren: Cora A. Hamill and Mark “Teddy” E. Hamill, Jr.
