TOWN OF MANLIUS – A group of Manlius residents plans to rally prior to the scheduled public hearing on the proposed six-month moratorium on commercial solar projects in the town of Manlius. The rally is expected to begin at 6 p.m. prior to the 6:30 public meeting.
In a news release issued Monday, local teenager Maia Chakin said teens planned to attend the rally with signs and banners demonstrating their support for solar farms.
“Decisions made today by the town of Manlius officials will determine the world we grow up in,” Chakin said. “The town needs to start building out renewable energy now.”
The group Climate Change Awareness & Action also planned to present the town board with a petition in support of solar farms signed by more than 300 residents.
In the past couple of years, the town of Manlius has approved the plans for five commercial solar arrays, although to date, construction has not started on any of them. The proposed moratorium would not stop those five solar projects from moving forward, but it would pump the brakes on two additional solar projects that are winding their way through the approval process currently – the Duguid Road and Salt Spring Road solar projects.
