A new candidate for Onondaga County Legislature, Nodesia Renee Hernandez, made an appearance at the anniversary celebration hosted by the Greater Liverpool Chamber of Commerce May 14, at the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge.
Hernandez — who lives in Liverpool — also hosted a dessert reception May 19, at the North Syracuse Community Center.
The candidate is the CEO of the Minority Paralegal Association promoting a better environment for at-risk community by empowering youth. A Democrat, she also works as the director of community outreach for New York State Sen. Rachel May (D, 53rd District).
While pursuing her legal studies degree at Syracuse University, Hernandez worked with the Onondaga County Bar Association. For the past 17 years, she has worn many hats while employed by the Syracuse City School District.
Challenging Rowley
A mother of three, Hernandez is challenging incumbent Republican Legislator James Rowley. A former Town of Clay supervisor, Rowley now works as assistant superintendent of the Oneida City School District. A former registered nurse, Rowley joined the legislature in 2018 after being elected without opposition in 2017; 315-622-0059.
An alumna of Liverpool High School, Hernandez says her goal is to empower the people of the county’s 2nd District, which comprises most of the western side of the town of Clay.
“We must hold our county legislators accountable, put people ahead of profits and stand with tenants, home-owners and our businesses,” Hernandez said. “We must build an Onondaga County for our children and future generations;” 315-944-0007; nodesiahernandez.com.
Another seafood suggestion
Last week I reported on a few local eateries which serve scrumptious seafood dishes.
Then a friend took me out to lunch at Francesca’s, in the old Ponderosa Plaza at 207 Oswego St. and ordered me a plateful of seafood greens.
The shellfish-laden variant of Utica greens is tossed with bay scallops and sautéed shrimp and finished with grated Romano cheese and plenty of garlic. The zesty dish is very different because you rarely see that combination of escarole and shrimp. Delish!
You can also order a less-generous version of Francesca’s seafood greens as an appetizer; 315-451-1200.
Corbin earning his dough
Did you happen to see Cicero-North Syracuse graduate Patrick Corbin mow down the New York Mets on May 15 when he pitched the Washington Nationals to a 5-1 victory over the Amazins?
The 29-year-old southpaw whiffed 11 while allowing just four hits and a single earned run. So far this season, Corbin has won four and lost only one game.
An all-star left-handed starter, Corbin signed a six-year-deal with Washington in the off season worth $140 million.
When he was a kid growing up in the town of Clay, Corbin was a big fan of the New York Yankees, who always seem to be in need of reliable starting pitchers. I can’t help but wonder why Yanks GM Brian Cashman failed to add Corbin to the rotation of the Bronx Bombers. Instead, our hometown hero inked a lucrative pact with the Nats.
Hot dog deal
You can buy a Hofmann’s frank for just $2 at the ice-cream stand at the Hickory Hill Golf Course, 3451 State Route 31; 315-652-5221. That’s more than a dollar less than the price charged at Heid’s, Liverpool’s landmark drive-in where a single frankfurter costs $3.30.
