Minoa Mayor Bill Brazill has been appointed chair to the nominating committee for the New York State Conference of Mayors (NYCOM).
Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy, the statewide association’s president, made the selection.
“It’s a great honor,” Brazill said. “They’re seeing that I want to be involved and do as much as I can for the group.”
The eight-person committee determines the slate of officers, a group to be elected by voting members next week at NYCOM’s 110th Annual Meeting at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown.
In accordance with traditional practices, the current first vice president assumes the role of president, while the current second vice president takes their previous spot and the treasurer remains in place.
This year, the committee will select a village mayor to fill the vacancy left behind by Richard David, the mayor of Binghamton and presently the second vice president.
These officer positions will be held for a one-year term beginning May 6.
NYCOM, established in 1910 to provide effective municipal services, represents 575 cities and villages across the state, ranging from the smallest village to New York City.
“NYCOM’s a great organization,” Brazill said. “It helps us be one voice going to Albany to fight for legislation that we believe in.”
He said the annual meeting, which he has attended for the past 17 years, also informs his role as mayor.
“I’ll take the two or three days off from work to go to this because I know what I can bring back to my community,” Brazill said. “I’ve learned so much over the years, and I think that really speaks for my success in the village of Minoa and securing grants from Albany and just understanding how the process works.”
