The Manlius Town Board has voted to set a public hearing to discuss whether or not the town should vote to override the 2 percent New York State property tax cap set by Governor Andrew Cuomo for the upcoming 2015-16 budget.
The public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 301 Brooklea Drive, Fayetteville.
Manlius Town Supervisor Ed Theobald said the board must hold a public hearing each year so they can determine if it will be necessary to override the tax cap for the upcoming budget. The town voted to override the tax cap last year, but did not need to override it when the final budget was passed.
The New York State property tax cap was created to require local governments and school districts to raise taxes no more than 2 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less. To have a tax cap override, the town board must vote with a majority in favor of the override.
