NELSON — On Aug. 7, 155 runners gathered in the Town of Nelson to participate in the 12th Annual Mad Cow 5K.
The USA Track & Field certified course began in the hamlet of Nelson, proceeded along a section of US Rt. 20, and ended at the Nelson Town Hall Park.
Refreshments, prizes and awards were provided immediately following the race at the town hall.
Proceeds from the race benefit local emergency service providers and the ongoing Nelson Walkability Project, an initiative that will eventually create a two-plus mile ADA-compliant walking loop through Town of Nelson parkland, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Nelson Swamp Unique Area, and the Nelson hamlet. Upon completion, the loop will be incorporated into future Mad Cow 5K races.
“We are very pleased with the enthusiastic turnout, the generous sponsorship, and the dedicated volunteers for this year’s race,” said race director John Dunkle. “We raised over $1,500 . . . and had a lot of fun doing it. Can’t wait until next year.”
