Cazenovia College Equestrian team (CCET) members Gabrielle Baker, Savannah Mannes and Erica Ferreira have been selected to represent the American Student Rider Organization (ASRO) for Team USA at the Student Rider Nation’s Cup (SRNC) from October 20 to 22 in Bern, Switzerland.
The trio of Wildcats each submitted an application with video highlights and were selected by a panel from the ASRO to represent Team USA at the fourth SRNC event of the year.
At international student riding competitions, teams compete in both dressage and show jumping. There are four rounds of each, and students have the ability to advance to the next round if they have the highest score on the horse they draw.
Fourteen countries will compete for the Student Rider Nations Cup in Switzerland this week including confirmed entries from Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States and the host country of Switzerland.
CCET members and Team USA representatives Baker, Mannes and Ferreira will potentially compete in four separate rounds registering both individual and team scores for their country. One-third of the top riders in each round will advance to the next, before a final round competition between two riders determines both an individual and team champion.
Horses are provided by the host country and a limited warmup is allowed.
This summer, Cazenovia College junior and equestrian team member Keeley Gambino was also selected as a member of Team USA and competed at the Student Rider Nation’s Cup in Germany (August 3-5). Gambino joined teammates Lauren Franco (Mt. St. Mary’s University) and Amanda Pollack (Arizona State University) as Team USA finished 8th overall of the 15 competing countries.
Current CCET Head Coach Amy Sherrick-von Schiller is no stranger to International events either, and began competing internationally in 1998, at her first event, ironically in Bern, Switzerland. At that event, Sherrick-von Schiller won the show jumping portion, finished seventh in Dressage, and was named the overall individual champion.
Following her win in 1998, she continued to compete on the international stage traveling to Ireland, Austria and Sweden as well. Sherrick-von Schiller has also had the privilege of representing Team USA as the Chef d’Equipe (Team Coach) several times for various U.S. teams over the years.
“The event is a great opportunity for students to network, and meet horse people/professionals from all over the world,” said Sherrick-von Schiller. “The experience could also lead to potential internship/job opportunities abroad if students are interested.”
