Four Cazenovia High School students scored perfect 100s on their New York State Regents examinations in United States History in June. Briar Becker, Jack Eldred, Colton Kubiniec and Elizabeth Shephard were rewarded for their superb scholarship with a free dinner at the Brewster Inn. The students were all members of Kurt Wheeler’s history class during 11th grade. Twenty-one of Wheeler’s other Grade 10 and 11 students just missed the dinner by scoring 99 percent on their Regents exams.
Cazenovia High School history students performed superbly as a group during 2016 with 100 percent passing the Regents exam in United States History and 98 percent passing in Global History. An impressive 80 percent of the 1th grade students scored an 85 or higher on the U.S. exam while 71 percent of the sophomores achieved “mastery” by scoring an 85 or higher on the challenging Global History exam.
Cazenovia students also performed well on the college-level Advanced Placement examinations in World and U.S. History and in American Government and Politics. On the U.S. history examination, 66 percent scored a 3, 4 or 5 on the rigorous test compared to the national average of about 50 percent. In American Government and Politics, a school-record 79 percent of Cazenovia seniors scored a 3, 4 or 5 on the AP exam compared to approximately 50 percent nationally.
The tradition of celebrating perfect scores on history Regents exams in Wheeler’s classes is now in its 16th year. The dinners are co-sponsored by Richard Hubbard and the Brewster Inn each year as a way of encouraging academic excellence in our local schools.
