The New York State Fair recently has completed its annual two-week run, and among the myriad state residents who have won ribbons in competitions in everything from arts and crafts to agriculture to animal husbandry to cooking to talent competitions, a number of residents in the Eagle Bulletin publication area have claimed prizes.
As of press time, ribbon winners from the area of whom we are aware include:
—Diana L. Adams, of East Syracuse, placed third in adult sewing, costume; third for sewing with a flair, purse; and first for home crafts memory pages — children and/or any other.
—Gerald Andrews, of Manlius, was awarded in commercial vegetable production, including: third place for snap beans; first for sweet corn; first for green table onions; first for spinach; second for squash; third for tomatoes; third for cherry tomatoes; and fourth for any other vegetables (except potatoes) categories. He also received awards for largest commercial vegetables: third in largest tomato; and second for largest ear of corn by weight.
—Thomas Andrews, of Manlius, placed first for commercial potatoes for white varieties and red varieties and had several records in commercial vegetable products: first for snap bean; second for sweet corn; second for green table onions; first for squash (acorn); second for tomatoes; first for cherry tomatoes; and first in the any other vegetable (except potatoes) category. He also received awards for largest commercial vegetables: and fourth for largest tomato and first for ear of corn by weight.
—Jackie Ayres, of Fayetteville, placed first in counted thread cross stitch — sampler; first for any other needlework; and first for miniatures —hand crafted fine arts.
—Joan Balfour, of Fayetteville, placed first in stained glass — any other glass maximum 20 inches; third in fold art — country folk, primitive, Americana; and third in decorative painting — whimsical/mystical.
—Dianne Banac, of Jamesville, won second place in senior citizens ceramics, any other article – decorative.
—Joseph Banac, of Jamesville, placed fourth in ceramics — any other article (decorative) maximum of 10 pounds; and first for ceramics — best of section.
—Janet Bender, of Kirkville, placed first in culinary chocolate candy.
—Holly Block, of DeWitt, placed third in culinary cookies — decorated cut-out; and third for drop cookies.
—Dawn Dix, of Jamesville, won first place in senior citizens ceramics, any other article – decorative.
—Jaclyn Grosso, of Fayetteville, placed third in youth horse show, mounted games, class 312: straight line – senior.
—Roseanne Guidera, of East Syracuse, placed first in decorative painting still life — fruit, floral, etc; second for decorative painting stroke work — Bavarian, Early American; and first in decorative painting — holiday.
—Nina Haley, of Fayetteville, placed second for favorite Spam recipe ages 7 to 17.
—Luana Impellizzeri, of Jamesville, placed first in culinary — favorite recipe using New York state potatoes; second for jelly prepared without commercially-prepared; first for culinary — King Arthur flour contest ages 18 and up; second for pound cake; first for vegetable cake; first for New York maple producers appetizer, entrée or dessert; second for yeast bread; and first for yeast sweet rolls.
—Nina Kalinkos, of East Syracuse, placed third for miniatures — hand crafted accessory.
—Eli Kligerman, of Fayetteville, won third place in youth photography, grades 1 through 6, black and white or color.
—Rhona Knutsen, of Kirkville, placed first for a stuffed animal or toy, under six inches; second for a stuffed animal or toy over six inches; and second for handmade cloth doll/rag doll.
—Mady Kudisch, of Fayetteville, placed third in cake decorating senior division — fondant; and first for cookies — decorated cut-out.
—Kimberly Massa, of Manlius, placed second in counted thread cross stitch — all other.
—Ron Mawson, of East Syracuse, placed first for wood — scroll work; fourth for wood — any original piece; and first for miniatures — hand crated figures.
—Joan Peters, of Fayetteville, won first place in senior citizen sewing, adult clothing; first place in senior citizens mixed media three dimensional; second place in senior citizens hobby crafts, arts and crafts (any item); second for yarns for clothing, two skeins for use in weaving; first for novelty yarn, two skeins for any use; second for fiber techniques —any other non-wearable; and first for fiber techniques — best of section.
—Jennifer Picciano, of Jamesville, placed first for culinary apple pie; and first in the gold medal flour cookie contest.
—Joe Picciano, of Jamesville, placed third in favorite Spam recipe ages 7 to 17.
—Bethel Popp, of East Syracuse, placed second in counted thread cross stitch — sampler; and second for counted thread cross stitch — other.
—Helen Rezak, of DeWitt, won fourth place in senior citizens painting, watercolor.
—Jaque Rider, of Kirkville, placed first for culinary cookies — half moons; and second for bean dish.
—Julie Rider, of Kirkville, placed third for ceramics (decorative) — any other article maximum of 10 pounds; second for cheesecake; second in cake mix creations;
—Ana Ross, of Fayetteville, placed fifth in youth horse show, dressage division, training level test 1 – junior; fourth in dressage division, training level test 2 – junior; and ninth in dressage division, dressage equitation – junior.
—Virginia Soffetti, DeWitt, placed first for culinary — your favorite food on a stick; second for layer cake, frosted; and second for New York maple producers appetizer, entrée or dessert.
—Tim and Julia Walberger, of Manlius, placed third for Grade A dark color and robust taste maple syrup and placed fourth for Grade A very strong and dark taste maple syrup.
—Jeanann Wieners, of DeWitt, won third place in professional photography, black and white print.
—Susan Weinheimer, of Manlius, placed third for culinary — pastries; second for heritage cookies; second for chocolate candy; and first for scones.
—Cheryl L. Wolfe, of DeWitt, placed fourth for collection of hand-sewn doll clothes.
—Dorothy Young, of Fayetteville, placed second in decorative painting — landscape.
