Area residents win awards in arts and crafts, fine arts, farming and wine making and distilling

The New York State Fair is in the middle of its annual two-week run, and so far, among the myriad state residents who have won ribbons in competitions in everything from arts and crafts to agriculture to animal husbandry to cooking to talent competitions, a number of Cazenovians have claimed prizes.
As of press time, ribbon winners from the Cazenovia area of whom we are aware include:
—Elizabeth Koennecke received a second place ribbon in the Artistic Flower Design Show Two – Class 8 “New York Celebrates” – “May to August.”
—Anna Marie Ramirez received a third place ribbon in the Artistic Flower Design Show Two – Class 15 “Mother’s Day.”
—Sarah Sack received a fourth place ribbon in the Artistic Flower Design Show Two – Class 9 “Cinco de Maio.”
—Beth Broadway has won two ribbons at the state fair so far, with a second place and an honorable mention in quilting.
—Bonnie Slocum won a first place and a third place in hand-woven basketry.
—Julie Mattina has won three awards at the state fair so far, including fourth place in weaving, honorable mention in hand knitting and honorable mention in quilting.
—Nancy Sellers has won two ribbons so far at this year’s state fair with two honorable mentions in quilting.
—James Tainter, of Erieville, has won two ribbons so far, a third place in country folk art and third place in wood.
—Kate Martellock won a second place ribbon in the youth poetry competition, ages 17 and under.
—Owera Vineyards won three medals in the commercial wine awards: a gold medal for its 2013 Owaghena White; silver medals for its 2013 Teddy’s Red, 2014 Janey’s Rose and 2013 Cazenovia 1793; and a bronze medal for its 2014 Betty’s White.
— Old Home Distillers, of Lebanon, won three silver medals in the in the commercial wine awards for their gin, corn whiskey and applejack.
—Dylan Anderson has won three First Premium awards at the fair in the Forage and Grain category, for haylage, early silage corn varieties and oats grown in 2015-16.
As more state fair competition winners are announced on the state fair website, or are shared with the Cazenovia Republican, more will be published.
